Astronomers Kept Busy Last Year By Important Events In The Heavens Climaxing a year marked by four partial eclipses of the sun and two total eclipses of the moon, the largest sunspot group ever ob served appeared in 1946, accord ing to the Encyclopaedia Britan nica 1947 Book of the Year. Ne\yton Lacy Pierce, associate professor of astronomy at Prince ton University and author of "the ? article in the Britannica Book of the Year, reported that one of the sunspots had an area of 4,440,000, 0Q0 square miles, which'is more than twenty-two and one half j times the surface area of the earth. I This largest sunsptrt ever noted was one cf a group that appeared in January. The leading sunspot in the series appeared around the east limb of the nm on the morning of January 29. The group was'so large how ?v*?r, that two days were required for the sun's rotation to bring the entire group into view. The area of the entire sunspot group was 6.300.000,000 square milts. Intense flares were observed on , j February 6. and about 16 hours I later, a magnetic storm arose.
