Society and Personal Dorothy Mae McKee Honors Mary K. Monteith Miss Dorothy Mae McKee was hostess on Thursday evening at the home of her aunt, Mrs. C. H. Nicholson, at East ,LaPo'rte, at a bridge shower as a courtesy lor Miss Mary Kathryn Monteith, who will be married June 27 to Bill Hupman of Mebane. Three tables were arranged for play. When scores were totaled, Miss Lela Moore Hall and Miss Lou Elsie Parker had tied lor high score. They cut for the prize and (Miss Parker, the winner, present ed her gift to the honoree as did Miss Dorothy Sue Talient, low score winner. A salad course was served. Miss Monteith was then given a shower of gifts, which, when opened, proved to be both lovely and useful. Making up the guest list, besides the honoree, were her mother, Mrs. H. E. Monteith, Mrs. W. L. Jones, Mrs. Kermit Bumgarner, Mrs. Charles Poteet, Mrs. Rudy Hardy, Mrs. Dan B. Hooper, and Misses Agnes Wilson, Rebecca Sue Cannon, Lela Moore Hall, Lou Elsie Parker, Nancy J. Allison, and Dorothy Sue Tallent. ? * * Shields-Hoyle Marriage Announced Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Shields have ann<3bnced the marriage of their daughter, Nora Lee, to Wesley R. Hoyle on Sunday, May 18 at the home of Rev. F. P. Blankenship, who performed the double ring ceremony. The bride wore for her wedding a white tailored dress with white accessories and a corsage of red roses. She is a graduate of Sylva high school in the class of 1947. Mr. Hoyle, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hoyle, graduated from Sylva high school in 1943. He served two years in the U. S. Army, spending one and one half years in France and Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Hoyle are now liv ing with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Mrs. Henson Hostess To Home Demonstration Meet The Sylva Home Demonstration* Club met Monday aiternoon with Mrs. A. M.' Henson as hostess. There were 23 members present, including one new member, Mrs. P. A. Donnahoe, and one visitor, Mrs. Lea McDarius of Cleveland, Tenn. Mrs. R. U. Sutton presided over the business session, and Miss Helen Sossamon, Home Demon stration agent, gave a report on the district meet in Waynesville. Each county of the western dis trict of North Carolina is to nom inate one delegate to make a trip to Holland to get a general view of home conditions there, and of those nominated one nominee will be selected in Raleigh to repre sent the district. The Sylva Club selected its president, Mrs. Sutton. The speaker was Mrs. R. U. Sut ton, whose subject was Home and Family. The talk was followed by group discussion. Miss Sossamon then displayed some of the handi crafts which she made while at tending a recent short course for home agents'at Penland. A salad course and iced tea were i served by the hostess, assisted, by Mrs. Walter Jones and Mrs. Carl Buchanan. Members present were Mrs. /C. L. Allison, Mrs. A. O. Allison, Mfs. O. E. Nichols, Mrs. Sam Monteith, and Mrs. Dan Bryson. ;|< * * ' Mr. And Mrs. Hoyle Honored At Shower Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Hoyle, who were recently married, were guests at a shower given in their honor last Friday evening at the home of Mr. Hoyle's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hoyle. The shower was given by the groom's sister, Miss Hilda Hoyle. Many friends were present and, alter enjoying several games in which Mrs.'A." j. Shields, mother of the bride, and Mrs. Lawrence Monteith were prize winners, the guests were .served a sweet course I by the hostess, assisted by her mother and Mrs. Preston O'Kelly. Following this the bride was presented many lovely and uS'eful gifts. At the conclusion of the games Mrs. E. E. Tweed was given the high score award and Mrs. Andrew B. Wilson the one for low score. C. with her aunt, Miss Bessie Snyder, has returned to her home here. She came by Asheboro and visjted her aunt, Mrs. L. B. Wilson and daughters, Mrs. E. E. Tweed, Mrs. F. L Web ber, and Hicks Wilson, en tertained at a Coea-Cqla party at their home on ^Cullowhee Road Wednesday afternoon from 3 to i 5:30 o'clock Vases of roses, larkspur, and snapdragons were used in the liv ing-room where the guests were received. Miss Hicks Wilson met them at the door and Mrs. J. H. Wilson introduced .them to the honoree. In the center of the dining-room table, which was covered with an imported cut-work cloth, a large crystal swan filled with mixed summer flowers was used on an oblong reflector. Small swans were placed at each corner. Pink candles in crystal holders com pleted the decorative scheme. Mrs. E. E. Tweed and Mrs. F. L. Webber invited the guests into the dining-room and assisted by Miss es Agnes Wilsorr and Gail Webber, and Mrs. F. M. Higdon, served hot ham biscuits, sandwiches, cookies and coca-colas to the fifty guests who called during the afternoon. * * * Mary Morris ^Celebrat^ Birthday Mr. and Mrs. John H. Morris en tertained a group of young folks at a picnic at Smokemont Thursday afternoon, the occasion being to celebrate the tenth birthday of their daughter, Mary. On arrival at Smokemont, the children enjoyed a swim. This was followed with a delicious picnic lunch, ending with the traditional birthday ca^ce and ice cream. Several games were played and marshmallows toasted over an open fire. Business Woman's Circle Meets On Monday evening Miss Hattie Hilda Sutton was hostess for the June meeting of the Business Woman's Missionary society of the Baptist church. Mrs. Jess Buchan an, president, was in charge of the ' business part of the meeting. Miss Mary Henson gave the de votional and Mrs. Harry Ferguson, program leader, had arranged for Miss Hattie H. Sutton and Miss Edna Allen to have parts on the program. Mrs. Porter Scroggs and Mrs. Grayson Cope,- members of the Ruby Daniel circle, were guests and presented a musical program. The hostess served an ice course to the 21 members and guests present. * * * Bridge Club Met With Mrs. Stovall Mrs. J. P. Stovall was hostess on Friday evening for the fortnightly meeting of her card club. On ar rival the guests were served a dessert course, after which two tables were made up for play. Mrs. Woody Hampton won the high score and Mrs. Leon Sutton held second high, and both were given lovely gifts. Members playing were Mrs. W. T. Wise, Mrs. T. N. Massie. Mrs. Leon Sutton, Mrs. Keith Hinds, and Mrs. Grover Wilkes. Guests were Mrs. C. C. Buchanan, Mrs. Woody Hampton and Mrs, C. E. Thompson. ?I* Mrs. T. C. Wilson Is * Hostess For Woman's Club Bobby Allison, who spent some time jn Hawaii during the recent war and made a nice collection of slides of scenes on the island, had the program at the meeting of the Woman's club when it met with Mrs. Thomas C. Wilsorr Monday evening. He showed the slides and made interesting comments on each. Mrs. John H. Morris had ar ranged for the program. During the business session, pre sided over by Miss Hicks Wilson, president, the club voted to join other civic organizations in a movement to raise funds to enlarge the swimming pool. Richardsons Leave For Chillicothe, Ohio Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Richardson and son, Allen, left Friday lor Chillicothe, Ohio, where they will make their home. Mrs. Richardson and Allen will be in Chillicothe, but Mr. Richardson will travel much of his time being connected with the Mead Corporation in board development in the South ern mills.
