Sylva Troop Boy Scouts
Win First Place In
Water Meet Held Sunday
Representatives of the Sylva
Scout troop won first place in a
water meet at Camp Daniel Boone
last Sunday afternoon, in which
the Foil tana troop won second
place and uv.p 1(3 of Canton won
third place. The two Scouts from
Sylva w.-.o entered the meet were
Lambert Hooper and Tommy Fer
guson. both of whom have spent
lour weeks at Camp Daniel Boone
this summer.
The Sylva Scouts placed in each
of the contests, winning first place
in back >TVoke and 100-yarH dash,
and second place in canoe races
and- side stroke.
Several Sylva people witnessed
the meet and -Sylva's victory,
among them Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Fricks, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hooper,
ad Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ferguson.
?Th'e Scouts passed several merit
badge tests during the time spent
at camp this year. Lambert Hoop
er passed swimming and life sav
ing merit badge tests; Tommy Fer
guson, life saving and athletics;
and Franklin 'Fricks, who spent
three weeks at camp, swimming.
Charles Stillwell and Dicky Bark
ley left Monday to spend this week
there at the camp, the last week
camp will be open this summer.
Each of them were at the camp
earlier in the season.
A purebred OIC pig project is
being conducted in Franklin Coun^
ty with eight purebred OIC gilts
and one boar being distributed to
4-H Club members in the county.
Mrs. Lester Collier and daugh
ter, Nancy Dell, of Haines City,
Fla., were recent guests of Miss
Agnes Wilson.

NOTICE
To the Motoring Public: The
parking meters in the town of Syl
va will become operative Monday.
July 29. at 9 o'clock A. M. and will
continue in operation each day
from 9 A. M. to 5 M. exception
Sundays and holidays. The meters
provide for 12 minutes to two hour
parking periods. The meters will
take pennies and nickels but will
not take dimes. One cent gives
12 minutes parking time; two cents
24 minutes; three cents 36 minutes,
four cents 48 minutes and five
cents one hour. Two nickels can
be put in at one time for two hour
parking.
All violations will be subject to
a ticket and fine.

Joint Meeting
The circles making up the
Woman's Society of Christian Ser
vice of the Methodist church met
in joint session on Friday evening
in Allison building. Thirteen
members and three visitors were
present. Mrs. Harry Hastings pre
sided.
Mrs. Dan Tompkins had both
the devotional and the program.

was "Childhood and Recreation".;
Three young people to9k part in
the discussion. They were Audrey
Jane Jones. Edith Moore, and
Fiank Crawlurd, Jr. They told
of recreation in the Camp Fire
Girls and the Boy Scouts organi

The bride wore a white suit with
white and blue accessories and a
corsage of red rosebuds. 1
Mrs. Blanton is a graduate of
Canton High school and is now
employed by the Dixie Home StoYe
in Canton.
Mr. Blanton served two years
in the U. S. Navy, most of this time
being spent in the Pacific area.
He is now employed as manager
of the Dixie Home Store in Can
ton.
After a short honeymoon the
couple will reside in Canton.

Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Weathers of
Raleigh arrived Friday to spend
this week with Dr. and Mrs. H. P.
Smith at Cullowhee. Mrs. Nannie
Murray, mother of Mrs. Weathers
and Mrs. Smith, will return with
Mr. and Mrs. Weathers to Raleigh |
after having spent a month here
with Dr. and Mrs. Smith.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Reed
and son, Chajries, left Sunday for
a visit with Mrs. Reed's mother,
Mrs. John R. Reaves, at Mt. Olive.
Mis's Doris Bowman of Hickory
is visiting relatives and friends this
week in Sylva.
Mr. and Mrs. C. K. Olson and
I daughter, Marsha Kay, of Nash
ville, Tenn., spent last week-end
at their home in Cullowhee.
Mrs. Ernest Banning will return
to Raleigh the latter part of the
week after spending two weeks!
with her mother, Mrs. Roxie Rog
i Moore. Cpl. Simpson spent more
than eleven months overseas with
the army air corps and re-enlisted
in 1946. He is now stationed at
Pope Field at Fort Bragg.
Mr. and Mrs. Simpson are now
| spending some time with Mrs.
! Simpson's mother and other rela
; tives in Jackson county, where the
bride has lived for a great part of
her life and where she attended
| school. The couple will make their
home in Fayetteville at present.

Mrs. Olive Wilson and son, Neal,
are planning to leave this morn
ing to spend some time in Wiscon
sin and Minnesota. They will visit
Mrs. Wilson's brother in Appleton,
Wis., and her sister in Minneapo
lis, Minn., but will spend most of
their time in Dearwood, Minn.
Mrs. Wilson's daughter, Patsy, who
has been visiting in Dearwood
since June will return with them
to Sylva.
John Gibson left yesterday
morning for Inman, S. C., where
he will spend about two weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Washburn
and two children, Anne and Kent,
recently spent a few days here
with Mrs. Washburn's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. R. C. Allison. The Wash
burns were enroute from Ridge
crest to their home in Nashville,
Tenn.
Mrs. Charles G. Gulley, who
spent the past few weeks in Clay

WCTC during the second session
