Here and There By Bobby Ttrrell Sylva Baseball Club Whips Murphy, 6-0 Behind Lawson Brown Lawson Brown, pitching his first game in two weeks for Sylva, turned in a six-hit, 6-0 shutout over the Murphy conglomeration of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia All-Stars under the lights at Murphy Thursday night. Brown displayed a bit of wild ness at times and walked six men but in the clutches he was tighter than^a drum. He had the Murphy boys falling away from his fast ball all night and the plate ump duckr ing consistently throughout the game as he whiffed nine batters. Sylva's big guns lost no time in tagging crafty Shagg Hunt for four hits and four runs in the first in ning. Hunt put Tom Fore on base via the hit by pitcher route when he unleashed a fast ball into Tom's midsection. Jack Smith singled to center for the first hit of the game and J. B. Beam lined a dou ble down the left field foul line that scored both Fore and Smith. Ben Dillard, Sylva's round man third baseman, doubled to right center following George Lee's strikeout and Beam tallied on the hit. Brown lined a single over second to score Dillard standing up and Tommy Ellis ended the rally by flying out to center, therats until the sixth when Dil Sylva made no more prominent lard singled to center, stole sec ond, and romped home on Ellis' single. Tommy, in turn, stole sec ond, and went to third on Cole's throwaway over second, then scored on Dave Squirrel's line sin gle to center. Sylva's hitting parade was led by Dillard, Brown and Squirrel with two hits each in lour trips. WCTC Catamounts Loose To High Point Panthers 7-6 BIG NORTH STATE CONFERENCE TEAMS FOUGHT IT OUT ON EVEN TERMS Two big North State Conference elevens fought on even terms in Asheville's biggest contest of the year Saturday night in Memorial Stadium with the High Point Panthers edging the Western Car olina Catamounts 7-6 before a crowd of 5,000 people. Held scoreless in the first period by Tom Young's Catamount ma chine, the Panthers drew first blood in the second period and it was big Glenn Painter all the way. The; Panthers' Curt MacDonald, flashy 140 pound scatback, was held at bay -throughout the game and' Ralph James had to turn to Paint er who figured in every play in the touchdqwn drive. With first and ten on the Cata mount 23, Painter was trapped be hind the line and flipped a lateral to MacDonald who picked up 11 yards .to the Cats' 12. MacDonald hi* a fast closing hole in the Cul lowhee line for 3 yards and Painter tossed a pass to Carl Tipton on the one yard line. Painter, the former Sylva high star, was stopped cold twice by the Catamount line before he hit pay dirt on third down. Mac Donald held and James Petree kicked the extra point which proved to be the winning margin. But the Catamounts were not to be silenced, Ralph Clark, quarter-j back took the kickoff on the Cul lowhee 17 and returned it to the 39. Jim Bryson, Von Ray Harris, and Paul Monroe then staged the Cats' touchdown drive, each net-1 ting a long run and a first down | to the cause. Bryson picked up seven yards through center from the eight yard line and from the one yard stripe Von Ray Harris plunged over two plays later for the touchdown. Frank Hardin missed the placement kick for the extra point. During the last half the Cats carried the battle to High Point almost all the way and in the final minutes they brought the crowd to its with a barrage of passes that all but clicked into another town down drive. . ?
