AT ARGURA CHURCH

Funeral serv ices were held Fri- j
day, October 17 at 2 p. m. at the
Oak Ridge Baptist church at Ar
gura for Odas Dewey Broom, who
had passed away at his home in
Darrington, Wash., on Friday, Oc
tober 10. Rev. W. M. Breedlove,
pastor of the First Baptist church
in Darrington, accompanied the
body home and had charge of the
funeral service.
Mr. Broom was born on Decem
ber 29, 1912, and was 34 years of
age at the time of his death. He
was married on December 6, 1936,
to Miss Irene Mathis of Argura.
She survives with four sons, Car
los, David, Kay W. and Nath M.;
and two daughters, Rosemary and
Gladis, of Darrington, Wash.; two
brothers, Fred of Darrington and
Ralph of Argura; four sisters and
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cute
man Broom of Argura.
Mr. Broom and his family left
Argura about four years ago and
went to Washington where he was
engaged in logging. An accident
suffered about four months ago led
to his death.
Fred Broom, brother of the de
ceased, and Mrs. Broom and Rev.
W. M. Breedlove, who came here
with the body left Wednesday to
return to their homes in Darring
ton.

church will meet in the college
gymnasium for a variety night.

tertainment will be available.

munity are invited to attend.

a business trip to Knoxville
Wednesday. Miss Hedden has jast
recently returned from Charlotte,
where she had completed a course
in floral designing. She studied un
der Maxwell and Johnson.

end in Raleigh with Jimmy Gray,
who is a student at State college.
M iss Eula Gray, who had been
visiting her brothers in Sylva,
Murphy, and Hayesville returned
to Raleigh with them.

loween carnival at the school
house. Among the entertainment
features will be a beauty contest,
contestants coming from the stu-'
dents of Mrs. Madison and Miss
Sherrill; house of horrows; bingo;
country store; and cake walks.
Other activities in which the
PTA of the Dillsboro school plans'
to participate is to make improve
ments on the wiring system of the
school, the purchase of play ground
equipment, and making improve
ments in the auditorium. The or
ganization will also sponsor a
school paper of which the first
issue will be published within a
week or two. *

DILLSBORO STUDENTS TO
HAVE MUSIC INSTRUCTION
Mr. N. R. Beacham, band in
structor of the Sylva schools, now
goes to the Dillsboro school on
Tues., Wednes., and Thurs., after
noons of each week where he
teaches public school music, fourth
through the seventh grades. Mr.
Beacham will organize a drum and
bugle corps which will play with
the Sylva band on special oc
casions. He will also organize a
Rhythmn band of aproximately 40
pieces. The children of this group
will have adequate instruments for
real playing and will be taught to
read and play the music notes.
DILLSBORO 4- H CLUB
About 60 boys and girls of the
Dillsboro school are members of
4-H clubs. Officers include: presi
dent, Kenneth Rhodes; vice-presi
dent Bobby Neal Jacobs; secretary
treasurer, Jeannette Queen. Pledge
leader is Bobby Brown.
At present the girls are study
ing home beautification and the
boys are working on cattle or stock
projects. Mrs. Sherrill and Mrs.
Madison are faculty- advisers.

Mrs. Corbett Sutton is in charge
of the school lunch room. Mrs.
Lillian Madison, principal of the
school, stated that during Septem
ber 1199 lunches were served, in
cluding 104 free lunches; An av
erage of about 75 lunches are
served daily.
