The Great Smoky Mountains
National Park which led all other
national paiks in number of vis
itors during travel year ending
September 30, attracted 132,906
persons in October, according to
Superintendent Blair Ross. In Oc
tober li*46, 111,541 persons visited
the park.
Official figures released from
"Washington discloses that the
Great Smoky total for 1946-47 was
2,186,748, while the second most
popular park was Mount Ranier
with 1,067,979.

other national parks were ahead
of the Great Smokies and listed
Lake Mead at the top but Mr. Ross
explained that Lake Mead and
certain others on the list were na
tional recreation areas and not na
tional parks.
The Smokies attendance increase
for the travel year was up three
per cent compared with the pre
vious year.

ROAD WORK STARTED
Work is starting on a new road
at Fontana Dam. That road will
be little more than a mile and it
is not known when additional links
there will be built, said Mr. Ross.
Completion of the Western North
Carolina stretch through the addi
tional acreage purchased and giv-;
en the- park by TVA depends on
funds being made available.
Construction is also starting on
a new road at Fighting Creek gap,
which will eliminate hairpin curv
es on the stretch to Elkmont. The
straighter highway will lengthen
thfe distance about a half mile, how
ever. The contractor has 360 days
in which to complete the road.
"We believe the new highway
will give a better view of Fighting
Creek gap," Mr. Ross said.

Marrow, research associate pro
fessor of Horticulture at State
College, usually the only differ
ence between the plants at a con
siderable distance from the mother
plant and those nearby is that the
ones nearer the mother plant are
usually older and, therefore, lar
ger. The yield of fruit is decidedly
affected by the size of the plant .at
the end of growing season. For ex
ample, runner plants rooted in June
are usually at least twice the size
of runner plants rooted in Septem
ber. This means that the June
rooted plants will produce from
50 to 100 per cent more berries
next spring than will the Septem
ber runners. The primary differ
ence, ^ therefore, -between plants
nearer the mother plant and those
at a considerable distance is in
the size and age of plant. The
younger plants are fully as satis
factory for setting in a new field
as are the older plants.

Deer Hunt To Take Place at
Bladen Lakes November 13
The first public deer hunt of the
season to be sponsored by the
North Carolina Division of For
estry and Parks will take place at
the Bladen Lakes State Forest on
Thursday, November 13. Other
deer hunts will be conducted
November 20, 27, Dec. 4, 11 and
18 for bona fide residents of North
Carolina.
These hunts, which are to dem
onstrate wise use of all natural
resources of a state forest, will be
limited to two groups of thirty
hunters with dogs each day. Each
person in the hunts, using shot- I
guns with buckshot only, may kill
one buck deer and no other game
of any kind will be killed or mo
lested on the forest. No person may
qualify for more than one hunt
during the season.
