Eight women students represent

partment last week in Greensboro
and Durham. They were attend
-fng Meetings related to their major
fields of physical education and
recreation.
The group left last Friday, by
train, and arrived in Greensboro
that evening in preparation for the
Saturday program at the Woman's
College of the University of North
Carolina. This program was a
Field Day sponsored jointly by the
college and the North Carolina
Association of Federated College
Women. Nancy Blanton and June
Wright took part in the swimming
matches and were members of a
four-girl team which won the
"novelty relay eveni. Miss Wright
also placed in one other event and
Miss Blanton was commended for
her swimming style. The girls
were particularlxconcerned with
the manner of conducting the pro
gram, so, did much observation in
techniques of organization and of
ficiating; - *
Monday morning the trip was

FARMERS ADVISED TO
PUCE ORDERS FOR
FERTILIZER EARLY
Raleigh, Nov. 10?North Caro
lina farmers were^advised-by D. S.
Coltrane, assistant State CcDmmis
s;oner of Agriculture, to place or
ders early for fertilizer in order
to be assured of sufficient plant
food for their crops next year.
Coltrane emphasized the neces
sity for an early movement of fer
tilizer because of a potential shor
tage of boxcars, lack of storage
space and prospective insufficient
supplies of fertilizer on a national
basis.
"It seems that our farmers are
rather complacent with regard to
supplies of fertilizer for the com
*ng year", he commented.
Leaders of the fertilizer indutry
are anticipating no reduction in
the volume of fertilizer used in
North Carolina despite a prospec
tive sharp cut in tobacco acreage
next year. They see increased use
of fertilizer for corn, cotton and
pastures, and larger applications
gl fertilizer on the tobacco acreage
put into cultivation.
Few new fertilizer plants are
serving the tobacco area, and con
sumption of fertilizer is nearly
double what it was six or seven
years ago. .
Coltrane said farmers would be
making a mistake to postpone or
dering fertilizer because of# the
impending reduction in tobacco
acreage and low tobacco prices.
To be safe, farmers should get
their fertilizer before January, he
declared.
New and improved uses and thus
wider markets for cottonseed anc
other cotton by-products is the aim
of research just approved under
the Research and Marketing Act
of 1946, the U. S. Department of
Agriculture has announced.

such as Dr. Harold Meyers, of
UNC, Mr. V. K. Brown of Chicago,
John Eversman of Ecusta, and
many others.
Tuesday sessions were panel
discussions on various phases of j
recreation, such as scouting, camp
ing, municipal direction, church
work and industrial recreation.
Tuesday night a tour, sponsored by
the Chamber of Commerce, was
made of Greensboro recreation
facilities by the entire recreation
group. The W.C.T.C. girls were
honored by being placed in the
two leading cars and thoroughly
enjoyed their observation of the
city, the Children's museum, and
the new Negro Recreation Center
which is a converted U.S.O. build
ing.
Th? return trip to Cullowhee was
mafcle^'Wednesday by the group
which was composed of junior and
senior students. The majors who
attended were Nancy Blanton,
Rhea Brandon, Frances Bryson,
Marjorie Holcombe, Bertha Mar
tin, Jean Poteet, Betty Wier, and
June Wright. They were accom
panied by Miss Helen Hartshorn
who attended faculty sessions in
Greensboro and was invited to
speak to the Woman's Athletic As
sociation of Wake Forest College,
while in Durham.
