I Witness my hand, this the 3rd day of January, 1948. W. R. Sherrill k Commissioner or Court Jrfft. 8, 15, 22, 29 wrs. (By Rev. T. F. Deitx) It has no concern, no anxiety, no interest, neutral ? when good and evil are up for consideration, impartial, disinterested, without distinction or preference, careless, having no care, heedless, neglect ful, unthinking, inattentive, care less of consequences. I don't care, it doesn't matter to me; it doesn't matter how it goes; if others can put up with it I can. What a mud- I died condition of mind ? a bedark- | ened vision of future results! O, i I what a foe to progress, prosperity ' and safety is indifference. It keeps ' one from bein& sympathetic where ! sympathy is needed by those fac ing distress. This brings to mind , a scriptural incident recorded in j the 18th chapter of the Acts of the 1 Apostles where the Jews and i Greek quibbled and caviled about , Paul's preaching. Galio drove them ' from the judgement seat and they beat and most cruelly treated one ! Sosthenes, a good man. And Galio, the governor, with the authority to prevent it, cared for none of | Webster were the officiating min isters. Interment was in the church cemetery. Surviving are two daughter, Mrs. Rufus Hall anct Miss Anne Paint er, of Sylva; three sons, Burke and W. L. Painter of Sylva; four sis ters, Mrs. Mary Nicholson, Cullo whee, Mrs. Lela Campbell, Bel- ' mont, Mrs. Maggie Dills, Clover,' S. C. and Mrs. Rebecca Putnam, Hamilton, Wash.; one half-brother, Lee Ashe, Cleveland, S. C.; 18 grandchildren and 4 great grand children. Pallbearers were Cecil Dillard, Worth Bryson, Rudolph Sharpton and Chris Davis. Flower girls were Claudia Stan ford, Doris Middleton, Peggy Mid dleton, Juanita Norton, Ethel Has kett, Mrs. Alvin Hoyle, Mrs. Ro osevelt Ensley, Mrs. Mack Ashe and Mrs. G. E. Scruggs. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements. Indifference, What Is It? I these things. So goes the role of the indifferent. They stand off and say, it is none of my fight. They will even absent themselves from the church for lack of interest in the great things morally and spiritually for which the church stands. Many even show indifference in the house of worship. Some will snooze, others thumb their hymn books, some read the bulletin, if they have one, to see when and where the next social will be. Mind you, this goes on in many places while the | pastor pours out his heart and soul preaching the gospel which is the only power of God unto salvation. Even there and then indifference takes a good share of the valuable time of worship. Again when civic righteousness cries out for united effort to save our county, our homes, our chil dren, born and unborn, how it be hooves every true citizen ? men and women ? to cast off the shackles of indifference and play the part of good citizens. Won't you join heart and hand in this crusade against the legalized sale of wine and beer in Jackson county? The 3rd of February is the day when you can show your colors. Let not indifference to the right or care lessness to your best interest and the best interest to your county keep your from doing your moral and religious duty. God, save Jackson county from this immoral disgrace. What a happy day that would be. But if it is ever done, ( Christianity will have to do it. i LOST-Pair of plain rimmed glasses in brownr leather case in or near Theatre on Thursday night. Continued from page 1 stressed at this time and much im provement is underway. Many acres will be seeded and properly limed and fertilized within the next few weeks, which will add a great deal to the income of the veteran. With improved pastures, he not only will be adding to the value of the farm, but he is able to save much feed by having late and early grazing and be able to | produce better cattle for the mar ket. We wish to bring to your atten tion some of the veterans who are doing outstanding work: Cecil Al etfilKjer, of Greens Creek is do ing an excellent all-around job of farm improvement. He has acquir ed a number of pure breed shgrt horn cattle that are doing nicety. He has a new home with all mod ern improvements, has just finish ed th? construction Of a new bam with Concrete foundation; and is planning to build a modern poul try house this spring. H? seeded some two acres to alfalfa last fall and is seeding all land to cover crops. Ralph Davis of Webster has doftf an excellent job with his farm. He is doing soil improvement prac* tices that are showing excellent results. During the past year he has done an outstanding work on pasture improvement. Much clear ing and fencing has been done and with some re-seeding and phos phate he will have a good pasture. The over-all picture is very en couraging and a great deal can be accomplished in a short time if we will only follow a few simple rules and take the time to put them into practice. ?
