Conference Victory
Cullowhee, Feb. 9 ? Coach Tuck
McConnell's Western Carolina
Catamounts, who seem to have a
knack for knocking off conference
leaders, came through again to
night as they outfought the first
place Eastern Carolina Teachers
and came out with a 57-43 victory.
The Catamounts started out by
grabbing a quick 12-1 lead and
were never headed. Bobby McGinn,
Howard Barnhorst and Clyde
Pressley burned the baskets con
sistantly throughout the game and,
with point getting help from Bob
Tate and Veo Rhodes, managed to
hold on to the top part of the score.
ECTC moved up to within three
points of the Cats two times but
both times their rally was cut
short by quick Catamount baskets.
Howard Barnhorst turned in one
of the best showings of ball hand
ling and headwork that has been
seen on a Catamount court for
quite a while and gathered 12
points while doing so. McGinn came
through with 17 points to move to
within 20 points of his conference
leading teammate, Bob Tate, who
has a total of 236 points for 17
games. Clyde Pressley played an
outstanding floor .game as well as
an offensive game as he matched
Barnhorst's 12 points for runner

I CAN'T STEAL,
FLAVOR FROM
THAT BOTTLE
? Sure, we like sunlight? but it's
downright bad medicine for many
a bottled beverage. Gets right
through plain, ordinary bottles,
and steals the delicate flavor be
fore the bottle is even opened.
That's why Orange-Crush
comes in an amber, flavor-guard
ing bottle? the bottle that defies
the sun. Seels-out harmful light
rays? seals- in the fresh fruit flavor.
Try Orange -Crush today? taste
the extra freshness of true orange
flavor..

Appalachian Trounces
Catamounts, 75-48
The Appalachian Mountaineers
found revenge for the licking hand
ed them by Western Carolina
Catamounts earlier in the season
by dishing out a 75-48 setback to
Tuck McConnell's boys on the court
at Boone last Wednesday night.
The Catamounts, highly favor
ed to win the game, hopped off to
an early lead before the Moun
taineers found the range. But when
their eyes became adjusted to the
bucket it was just a case of flip
ping them in and by halftime they
held a 38-19 lead.
Bob McGinn was high man for
the game with 17 points while
Hiatt with 13, Beach with 12 and
Leslie Wey with 12 were the big
guns of the Mountaineer attack.
The Catamount's Howard Barn
horst was the outstanding floor
man. He racked up 12 points.
In the preliminary game, the
Catamount's "B" squad edged the
Appalachian Jayvees 47-46 in a
fast game. Nub Davis sparked the
Cats with 20 points.

WESTERN CAROLINA

McGinn And Tate
Run Wild
Cullowhee, Feb. 7? The West- '?
ern Carolina Teachers broke their !
losing streak here tonight by e- |
merging on the topend of a 60-55 j
decision over the East Tennessee ,
State cagers in a game that saw j
Bob McGinn and Bob Tate run I
wild and gather 47 points between
themselves.
The game started out very slow
ly but the pace became more rapid
as play progressed. During the
first few minutes of the game both |
teams missed a lot of shots and 1
neither team led by more than two !
points but the Catamounts took a '
16-14 lead just before halftime and
pushed it to 24-16 by intermission
time.
The last half featured good ball
handling on the part of both teams.
McGinn went wild, burning the
i basket from everywhere and con
ference leading Tate, who has re
cently been in a slump, began to
show his old form and soon the
, Cats held a 45-32 margin. The
visitors staged a rally during the
| last few minutes but two quick
baskets by McGinn and one by
j Tate cut the rally short and the
Cats went on to win.
McGinn pushed 27 points through
the hoop for the scoring honors
while Tate rung up 20. Vest was
the big shot for East Tennessee
with 17.
In the preliminary game, the

Appalachian Matmen
Swamp Cullowhee, 32-0
The Ap palachian State Wrestlers
handed Ci acn McKinley Hensley's
Western Carolina boys a 32-0
licking- at Boone last Wednesday
afternoon. The Mountaineers won
every match.
From first to last it was just the
case of too much experience on the
part of the Appalachian squad and
they used it to outwit most of the
comparatively green Cullowhee
boys. The first four matches were
taken by pins and the last four by
decision. Only one of Appalachian's
four AAU champions won by pin.
