PLANT TO BECOME
?Continued from page 1
Ferguion also inspected the new
construction oi the Division, some
of which has been completed and
others now in process of comple
tion. These include: black liquor
evaporators, now being installed;
wood and chip conveyor system,
under construction: boiler and
steam plant improvement, complet
ed last year; new warehouse for
finished products, finished last
year; improvements on paper ma
chine, now underway; new bath
and locker facilities for the em
ployees, completed last year; new
general office, completed a few
weeks ago; and other installations
now underway. Obviously, this
improvement means improved jobs
and improved markets for the
Sylva Division products.
In addition, the improvement
being made in the pulp mill?the
i Black Liquor Evaporator is the
first step in the Corporation's pro
gram to improve the stream pol
lution situation of the Tuckaseigee
river. Engineering and plans for
additional steps in this important
I problem are going forward as rap
idly as surveys and research will
permit. This is a major under
taking which will require both
time and study as well as a consid
erable amount of money.
The modernization program for
the Sylva Division is a definite
expression of the Corporation's
confidence in the future of the
Sylva operations. This conlidence
is the natural result of the pleasant
relations enjoyed over a long
period of years in Sylva.
The weather for Mr. Ferguson's
visit was the finest we have had
this year which added to the pleas
ure of his trip. He expressed
keep interest in this area of West
ern North Carolina. Mr. Ferguson
arrived Wednesday morning from
New York City.
GROUND BROKEN
(Continued from page 1)
Field Secretary of the Asheville
Presbytery delivered the message.
The ground breaking followed'
the above program and was parti
cipated in by the elders of the
church and the visiting ministers.
Little Johnny McHan, son of Elder
and Mrs. Vernon McHan shoveled
the first dirt.
The congregation then sung the
hymn, "Blest Be The Tie That
Binds," and the Benediction was
pronounced by the Rev. W. Q.
Grigg, pastor of the Sylva Metho

HALF MILLION TREES
(Continued from page 1)
olina Division of Forestry and
Parks m d.striouting taem through
the Agricultural Extension Serv
ice, free of charge, to farmers for
erosion control and reforestation
purposes. Some of the trees are
being distributed to lumber com
panies, pulp companies, and muni
cipalities for both forest products,
and watershed protection". The
truck load of seedlings arrived at
the State Forestry Warehouse in
Sylva this morning from the TVA's
forest nursery at Clinton, Tennes
see. Within three hours the 105,
000 shortleaf pine, 162,000 white
pine, 3,500 black locust and 20,000
yellow poplar were transferred to
the State Forestry trucks and were
on their way to landowners in i
Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Macon, I
Swain, and Transylvania counties.
Trees for Haywood county were
delivered by the second truck that
delivered trees to the other coun
ties at the Dist. 1 warehouse in
Asheville. An interesting fact is
that most of the white pine seed
for growing these white pine trees
were collected in Jackson county.
All the trees are returned to the
area in which the seed was colect
ed in order to keep the trees in the
same habitat in which the seed
producing trees grew. The Mead
paper cooperation is planting 25,
000 white pine on their company
land and the remainder of the
trees assigned to Jackson coun
ty are being planted by farmers
on their own property. Mr. Pettit
said "anyone who is interest&d in
planting trees on his property
should get in touch with the Coun
ty farm agent or any member of
the North Carolina Division of
Forestry and Parks". He said "there |
is no charge for the trees, but they
1 are not to be used for ornamental
I or landscaping purposes. The land
owner must agree to plant the trees ,
promptly and protect them from 1
fire and grazing." Mr. Pettit em
phasized the importance of fire
protection by saying that fires will
dist church.
The new church building will be
erected on the Higdon lot in the
City park area. Actual construc
tion is expected to get underway
immediately.
