OSBORNE TENDERS RESIGNATION AS CULLOWHEE PASTOR At the close of last Sunday morning's Worship Hour the Rev Mark R. Osborne, Jr., pastor of the Cullowhee Baptist Church, tendered his resignation to become effective June 1. It was the day of his thira anniversary as pastor here. He stated in his resignation: "The Lord has graciously blessed our labors together, and the time has passed rapidly . . . More than I could possibly say I am grateful for the many kindnesses which you have shown us ... As we have previously indicated, we earnestly desire to continue our training at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. We feel that our decision has been partially intensified by your gen erous response to our ministry es pecially during the patt year. I believe that I am endeavoring to follow the will of the Lord in preparing for the greatest service I can render Him. We leave with the warmest regards for each of you." Under Mr. Osborne's leadership the church at Cullowhee has pro gressed considerably. Attendance at the worship services has grown, the church finances have shown a marked increase, and the unity among the memberhip has been greatly strengthened. Prior to coming to Cullowhee Mr. Osborne was a senior announcer on the staff of radio station WPTF in Raleigh in addition to serving a field of churches in the Raleigh area. Mrs. Osborne was at that time head of the Spanish depart ment of Raleigh's Needham Broughtor^ High school. While here Mrs. Osborne has taught in the'Sylva Central High school and in the modefn language depart ment at W.C.T.C. Mr. Osborne follows his minister father's steps in more respects than ( one, for the senior Mark Osborne, a native of our neighboring Tran sylvania county, is a musician and humorist. The Cullowhee pastor has been in great demand for pro grams of entertainment in civic and. religious circles throughout West ern North Carolina during the past ? three years, Mrs. Osborne joining | him in vocal and instrumental achievements. He has also assisted numerous churches in our moun tain area as a singer in evangelistic campaigns and has contributed ex tensively of his energies to the young people's work of his de Cullowhee High School Wins First Place In Music Division The Cullowhee High school was winner of first place in the music division of the festival held at Western Carolina Teachers Col lege last Friday, April 30. Numbers awarded one's were: Mixed Chorus, Send Out the Light, by Charles Gounod; Girls 8 Chorus, Old Spanish Hymn, arranged by Morgan; Mixed Quartet, Stars of the Summer Night, by Woodbury, Cosette Blake, Ola Belle Smith, Jesse Flake and Joe Pressley; So prano. Elementary Grades Of Training School Present Concert The final program of the Ele mentary grades -of the Training School of Western Carolina Teach ers College was a concert by the Symphonet band and a chorus pre sented in the following program: Solomon Levi, Symphonet Band; Sweet Hour of Prayer, Betty Jean Flake; Whispering Hope, chorus; Twinkle Toes, Frank Allen Hunt er, Charles Snipes and Nestus nomination. The Osbornes have a baby daugh ter, Betsy, now nineteen months old who will accompany them to Louisville in June. She will prob ably be enrolled at the Seminary too, since there is an excellent nursery school. Cullowhee High Seniors To Give "The Little Shepherd Of Kingdom Come" The Senior class of Cullowhee high school will present "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come", the well known novel by John Fox, Jr., as a play in thre acts on Thurs Gurley; China Boy, and Roll A long, Dorothy Smith, Jean Park er, Virginia Norton, Ruth Ann Hamilton, Harriet Mashburn and Christine Walker; Alma Dodson, Joe Dodson; Lightly Row, Johnnie Buchanan, Larry Buchanan, Bes sie Pressley and Katherine Ashe; Pickanina Sandman, Chorus; Cir cus Days Trio, Edward Sutton, Guy Taylor and Andrew Brown; Amer ica. Club Has Monthly Meet The April meeting of tne Glen ville Home Demonstration club was held Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Charlie Russell with nine members present. The play is being directed by Mrs. Carl Killian. Niswonger To Meet With Jackson Farmers , H. R. Niswonger, Horticulture specialist from State Extension Service. Raleigh, will be in Sylva Monday, May 10th at 2:30 p. m. to hold a meeting in the court house on the growing of small fruits and vegetables. He will show slides and pictures of various steps in growing and marketing berries and vegetables. All persons in Jackson county are invited to attend the meeting changed by the members. During the social hour an inter esting game was played, after which the hostess served a sweet course. The next meeting will be held May 24th at the home of Mrs. Kate Bryson. and especially members of th* Hume Demonstration Clubs who are interested in marketing homo grown products.
