Marriage Announced
Mr. and Mrs. V. V. Hooper have
announced the marriage of their
daughter, Miss Verna Vaye Hoop
er, to Frank Monteith, Jr., of Sylva
and Spruce Pine, on April 15.
Mrs. A|onteityi, tihe youngest
daughter ,of Mr. and Mrs. Hoop
er, is a student, of Sylva High
school, and Mr. Monteith is at
tending Western Carolina Teachers
College. He served in the armed
forces for two and one-half years
during World War II.
The couple will make their home
m Sylva.
O. E. S. Chapter Meets
In Dillsboro
Oce chapter, No. 139, Order of
the Eastern Star, met in regular
session Wednesday, April 28, in
the Masonic hall in Dillsboro.
The new worthy matron, Mrs.
Hazel Carlson, presided for the
first time.
The meeting was opened in ritu
alistic order and routine business
attended to.
A social hour was enjoyed and
the hostess for the evening, Mrs.
Edna Hooper, served a sweet

T. E. L. Class Has Meeting
? The T. E. L. Class of the Scott's
Creek Baptist church met on
Thursday, May 6, with Mrs. Bill
D. Davis for an all-day meeting.
Covered dishes were brought and
a nice lunch was enjoyed by the
eight members and one visitor pre
sent.
Following the lunch a business
meeting was held. Mrs. Roy Dills
had the devotional and Mrs. D. G.
Bryson had the opfening prayer.
The minutes were read by Mrs.
Cole Ridley, the secretary. Vari
ous matters of business were dis
cussed.
The June meeting will be held
with Mrs. Maude Cooke. The meet
ing was dismissed with prayer by
Mrs. G. C. Snyder.

Cabe, Mrs. Jack Allison, Mrs. Mar
tin Cunningham, and Mrs. Ralph
Robertson.

With Mrs. ;Hampton
The Cullowhee Home Demon
stration club held its April meet
ing at the home of Mrs. G. T. Ham
pton with 20 members and a few
visitors present.
After the business session Miss
Johnston gave an interesting dis
cussion on ways of growing, bed
ding, and storing sweet potatoes.
She gave each member a leaflet of
recipes, one of which she demon
strated at the end of th meeting.
During the social hour the host
esses served delicious refreshments.
Mrs. John Crawford was joint
hostess with Mrs. Hampton.

For Gaynelle Circle
On Monday evening, May 3, Mrs,
J. F. Corbin was hostess for the
May meeting of the Gaynelle Mur
ray circle of the Baptist church
with 21 members in attendance.
The president, Mrs. Jesse Buch
anan, conducted the business ses
sion.
Miss Mary Henson was in charge
of both the devotional and the pro
gram. Assisting her were Miss
Hattie Hilda Sutton and Miss Edna
Allen, Mrs. John Henson and Mrs.
Ed Wilson.
Following the program the host
ess served a salad course.

Camp Fire Girls Have
Council Meeting
In an impressive candle light
ceremony, the Camp Fire girls held
their council fire and were pre
sented the special insignia for each
rank on Monday evening. A large
number of interested persons gath
ered in Allison building to witness
the event. Mrs. John Henson, one
of the guardians, in a few introduc
tory remarks, welcomed the guests.
I^rs. J. E. Buckner, another
guardian, presented pins to Sheila
Ann Kirchberg, Marta Ann Can
non and Jeannette Queen, who
were ready for the first rank, that
of Trail Seekers.
Rings were given to the group
who had reached the second rank,
that of Wood Gatherers. Those
receiving rings were Shirley Hart
mann, Joyce Nicholson, Leah Sut
ton, Patsy Buckner, Jean Cogdill,
Nancy Hartmann and Jean Nichol
son.
Edith Moore and Aurey Jane
Jones were presented bracelets,
the insignia for the third rank and
the highest so far attained by any
of the local camp, that of Fire
Makers. '
All the members were then giv
en the honor beads for work ac
complished along many different
lines.

To Halcyon Club
On Wednesday evening when^the
Halcyon Woman's club met with
Mrs. Denis Barkeley for the May
meetings Miss Annie Louise Madi
son of Webster,'a memoer of the
Sylva Woman's club, was guest

On Monday at 1 o'clock Mrs. B.
E. Gray entertained with a dinner
at her home in Dillsboro for the
faculty members of the Dillsboro
school. A delicious four course din
ner was served to Mrs. Lillian
Madison, Mrs. George Evans, Mrs.
Robert Sherrill and Miss Eliza
beth Warren, teachers, and Mrs.
E. L. McKee, sister of Mrs. Gray.
On last Tuesday the faculty
members were guests of the Par
ent Teacher association at Jarret
Springs Hotel.
U. D. C. Chapter Has
Monthly Meeting
Mrs. J. A. Bryson was hostess
for the May meeting of the B. H.
Cathey chapter, United Daughters
of the Confederacy, when it met
in Allison building on Monday eve
ning. The chapter attended in a
group the Council Fire ceremony
of the Camp Fire girls.
Following this a business session
was held with Mrs. Jennings Bry
son, the president, in charge. Plans
were completed for the U. D. C.
district meeting to be held in Sylva
Saturday.
Instead of having the regular
program, ?nd as a part of their
memorial day activities, the chap
ter presented a Cross of Military
Service to F. . Williams, a veteran
of World War I. These crosses are
presented to veterans of any of
the wars who are lineal descendants
of Confederate veterans. Mrs. Dan
Tompkins, before presenting the
c'ross, made a short talk telling of
the different crosses and explain
ing the meaning of each part of
this particular cross.
The hostess, assisted by Mrs. W.,
L. Jones, served cookies and ice
cream.

Mrs. Z. L. Cooke of Asheville
was a Sylva visitor last week. She
came out to attend the funeral of
her cousin, Patrolman Joe Bob
Davis.
Mrs. Chester Scott spent the
week-end in Wingate with her
mother, Mrs. Alice Jones. Mr.
Scott went down for the week-end
and she accompanied him home.
