ON-THE-FARM VETERAN TRAINEES ARE AFFECTED UNDER NEW SUBSISTANCE The new law increasing subsis tence allowances for veterans tak ing institutional on-farm training under the G. I. Bill will benefit only veterans training on their own farms in most cases, J. D. De Ramus, manager of the Veterans Regional Office, declared today. A trainee must take a minimum of 300 hours of related instruction a year to qualify for the raise, Mr. DeRamus explained. This is re quired of veterans training on their own farms but the minimum for employee-truinees is 250 hours, he asserted. Thus employee-trainees do not "qualify for the increase un less they are taking at least 50 hours a year more instruction than required. On-farm trainees without de pendents will be raised from $(>5 to ?8157.50 a month if they are eligible lnr the increase provided by Pub lic Latv 512. Those with one de pendent will be boosted from $90 j to $93.75, while those with more than one dependent will be hik ed to $97.50. Prior to April 1, subsistence al lowances were fixed at $65 a month for veterans without de pendents regardless of whether 1 they were attending school or [ training on the job. Ef fective April 1, allowances were boosted as follows for those at tending school full time: veterans without dependents, $75; with one dependent, $105; with two or more dependents, $120. Rates remain ed the same for on-the-job train ees. The higher rate applies where a trainee is taking as much as 300 hours of related instruction a year, but he is entitled to only one fourth of his subsistence allowance at these figures since his instruc tion cosumes only a quarter of his time. He is paid at the on-the-job rate for the other three-quarters of his time when he is actually i working.
