FORT Here And There BY BOBBY TERRELL By Bob TerrelI Although the Brookshire Millsj club is leading the Knoxville City^ Baseball league, they proved to ^ be the least competition Sylva hasi met so far this season. The Sylva boys had little trouble in pound ing out those base knocks and, Knoxville's inheld locked morci J iragile than a window pane. However, things are going to be different next Sunday at Mark Watson Field when Sam Patton brings his Enka boys against the Legionaires. At the present Enka is roosting on the top rung of the' WNC Industrial league ladder withl only one league defeat on their' record. They'll prove sufficient competition for the Sylva club to make the game interesting. What about those red hot Ashe ville Tourists ! ! ! Of all the lam basting, ballbusting baseball clubs! we've ever seen, they take the cake. It's been years since Ashe ville fans have seen the like, and its boys like those that make ma jor league stars. We don't know how true it is, but they say that A total of 10,368,000 hired and family workers were engaged in farm work on May 1. This was 1 per cent more than a year ago. The increase over last year was almost entirely in hired workers.' LADIES: READ THIS! Unwanted hair removed instantly lrom face, arms, legs, with Flash Hair Remover. McConnell Holds Spring Basketball At Cullowhee Western Carolina basketball coach E. R. (Tuck) McConnell pol ished oil iiis spring basketball training program at WCTC last Tuesday night with an intra-squadi game. All the veterans of last year's team with the exception of Howard Barnhorst who graduates this week and Veo Rhodes who is playing pro baseball at Hendersonville, work ed through the drills. Several high school prospects for next year's squad turned out und went through the paces with the varsity boys. McConnell made no predictions as to the Catamounts' chances in the North State Conference next winter, however it is known that his squad will be at full strength with only Barnhorst missing from the lineup and plenty of new boys coming in with hopes of playing ball for the Cats. Saturday and'Sunday. by scores of 19-1 and 10-4. Rush Sumner and Warren SYLVA, ENKA WILL CLASH NEXT SUNDAY MARK WATSON FIELD Tiie Enka Rayonkes, present' leaders of t:ie WXC Industrial league, will invade Sylva next Sunday to meet the Legionaires on Mark Watson Field at 3:30 p.m. The high flying Legionaires who have"won 6 out of 10 games play-i ed thus far will probably find Samj Patton's bunch to be* one of the oughest teams they have faced thii season. Skipper George Lee is uncertain as to who will be on the hill for Sylva while Enka's pitcher is also indefinite. in the newly organized Western Carolina Class D league and will) pitch for that club until he is fur ther notified. He, has worked two games for Marion so far, winning one and losing one. Brown will be remembered by Sylva fans as one of the fastest hurlers ever to don a Sylva uni form and for his clutch hurling. He seemed to be better when the chips were down and runners a board. Also, his strikeout record was one of the best ever complied by a Sylva pitcher. SYLVA BATTING AVERAGES Sen Dillard continued to lead thi Sylva Legionaires hitting parade through the games with Brook shire Mills although his average slumped from .500 to a neat .426. George Lee moved into second place with .394 as Ike Olson fell to third with .375 and Luther Nor ton to fourth with .364. Sylva fans saw their first Le gion home runs in the two game series with Jack (Lard) Cunning ham hitting for the circuit with two runners on in the first game and Ben Dillard duplicating the feat in Sunday's game with no one on. Triples were turned in by George Lee, Bub Phillips and Har ry Duke, and doubles by J. C. Price, Luther Norton and Lee. So the fans who have seen the lack of extra base hits by the Sylva club in previous games, got their fill this week-end . Brookshire, by means of a triple by Baldwin and an infield out, jumped to a second inning 1-0 lead in Saturday's game, but two Sylva runs by Hector and Price in the third gave the.lead to Sylva at 2-1. Rector singled, moved to second when Baldwin fumbled Brookshire By 19-1, 10-4 Price's ground ball, and to third on Ben Dillard's outfield fly, then stole home as Price stole second. Price scored on Lee's single. In the fifth and sLXth innings Sylva's hitters went wild both at the plate and on the bases as nine hits, six errors and eight stolen bases spelled 17 runs and a crush ing defeat for the Knoxville club. Pitcher Ru*h Sumner had the Brookshire boys eating out of his hands throughout .the game and in the last three innings he threw only 15 pitches, just dropping the ball over and making them hit. And they hit ? little pop-ups. In Sunday's game Warren Dey ermond was master of the mound all the way as he elbowed a five hit game and had perfect backing as Sylva played their first error less game of the season. Tucker and Taylor collected homers for Knoxville and Dillard for Sylva. Sylva 'jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Skipper George Lee doubled with Olson on third and Dillard on second. .Then Sylva added five more in the third, one in the fifth on Harry Duke's triple and Deyermond's single, and one in the eighth on Dillard's homer. Deyermond struck out nine men and walked only three. Duke and Dillard led Sylva in Sunday's game with two hits each, while Bob Phil lips and Lee had three each Sat urday including a iriple apeice.
