Society News and Club Activities Phone 110 Woman's Society Of Christian Service Has Study Course "Great* Prayers of the Bible" was the mission study book pre sented by Mrs. E. L. McKee to the members of the Woman's So ciety of Christian Service when it met at her home on Friday eve ring at 7 o'clock. The book, writ ten by Charles M. Laymon, pro fessor of literature and religious education at Scarritt College, Nash ville, Tenn., deals with great pray ers ol characters in both the old c.nd new testaments. One interest ing fact pointed out was that these special prayers were not always answered. Prior to the study course Mrs. .McKee served a bullet supper to the 20 members attending the stu dy, and following this a brief busi ness session was held under the direction of Mrs. Harry Hastings. the president. * * * Cullowhee Woman's Club , Has Monthly Meeting Miss Anne Albright, Mrs. Wade Hampton and Miss Cordelia Camp were joint hostesses for the May meeting of the Cullowhee Woman's club' which met in the classroom building on last Tuesday evening. Miss Mabel Tyree, the president, conducted a business session. Mrs. D. M. Hall and Mrs. Char lotte Watson were in charge of the program. Miss Watson taught the ladies to do a stencil and each member made a stencil for her self, chossing the pattern she de sired. Some were made for blou ses, for curtains, scarfs and other designs. The hostess served strawberry shortcake and coffee. * * * ^ Qualla Home Demon stration Club Meets The Qualla Home Demonstra tion club met with Mrs. Eula Beckj for the May meeting. There were twenty-three members present. The' president, Mrs. June Shelton, pre-1 sided over the business session.! Plans were made for members to attend the district meeting in Bry son City May 27th. The meeting was then turned! over to Miss Johnston, who gave a! very interesting and informative! lecture on the growing and pre-! serving of strawberries. A leaflet' of recipes using strawberries were I given to each member. Miss John-' ston also gave instructions on ? methods for preparing small fruits To Receive Degree In Music Miss Nona Jeanne Barrett, Dills boro, will be a candidate for a Bachelor of Music degree at the graduation exercises scheduled for Monday, May 31, at Converse Col lege, Spartanburg, S. C. Commencement activities a t Converse will begin on Friday eve ning, May 31, with the senior class banquet. Saturday, May 29, has been designated as Alumnae Day. Seniors will be entertained at lun cheon by the Alumnae Association members at 1 in the College di'nir.g room. Dr. Hardin Craig, professor of English at the University of North Carolina, will speak at the gradu ation ceremonies at which time Dr. Edward M. Gwathmey, presi dent cf Converse College, will a ward approximately 93 degrees. Other commencement speakers and vegetables for freezing. Club Has Meeting The ladies of the John's Creek community met on Wednesday, May 19, with Mrs. John Earley I for the monthly meeting of the Home Demonstration club. The curb market was dis j cussed and all are looking forward I to seeing it put through. Several members are planriing to attend the meeting in Bryson City. The dealer of the Stanley pro-, ducts gave an interesting demon stration on Stanley products. Miss Johnston, the Home Dem onstration agent was unable to be with us for this meeting. Club Met With Mrs. Bumgarner Mrs. Lewis Bumgarner was hostess to the Lovefield Home Demonstration club, which met Thursday, May 20, for its regular monthly meeting. Mrs. Dennis Higdon, the presi dent, opened, the meeting in reg ular form. The minutes of the last meeting were read and ap proved, the roll called, and dues paid. Fourteen people were pres-' ent, of which ten were regular members, two were new members, and two were visitors. During the business session plans were made for attending the dis trict meeting to be held in Bryson City, May 27. - - In the absence of the Home Demonstration agent, Mrs. Higdon was in charge of the program. The topic for the month was ''Straw berries". Mrs. Mabel Bumgarner reported on Mr. Niswonger's lec ture on "The Raising of Straw berries."
