Harold Grindstaff of Chicago left today after having spent a part ? of the week here with his mother, Mrs. W. E. Grindstaff, and in Asheville on business. Miss Kathleen Leonard of Taze well, Va., arrived to spend two -weeks here with her aunt, Mrs. W. E. Campbell, and Mr. Campbell. Sgt. and Mrs. D. R. Calhoun and ^sma?l son and daughter, left Wed Ttesday for Hattiesburg, Miss., for a two-weeks' visit with Mrs. Cal houn's parents. Sgt. Calhoun is local recruiting officer for the U. S. Army and Arhiy Air Force. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Dunn had ~ as their- guests, Sunday Misses Frances, Millie, Mary Elizabeth, and Anne Harper of Clover, S. C., all sisters of Mrs. Qunn. Mrs. Ralph Dills, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Dills and Mrs. O. E. Brook hyser will go to Chanel Hill to at tend graduating exercises at the ' University of North Carolina on Monday when their daughter and sister, Miss Lucile Dills, will be a1 member of the graduating class. ' Miss Carolyn Kizer, daughter of! Mr. and Mrs. A. H. krzer of Bre-j vard, whose mother is the former Miss Dorothy McKee of Sylva, is co-valedictorian of the senior class at Brevard High school. Mr. and Mrs. C. K. Olson and daughter, Marcia Kay, and Miss Doris Dills left Saturday for Luray, Kan., where they will visit Mr. Ol son's parents, Mr! and Mrs. H. M. Olson. They will return to Nash ville, Tenn., June 15, and both Mr. and Mrs. Olson will attend Pea body college this summer. Fred Council, who has been spending a few days with his uncle, Judge Dan Moore, and family, re turned to his home in Boone, Wed nesday. Mrs. Moore accompanied him home and will be a guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Council for a few days. Mrs. C. G. Gulley, who has been a patient at Harris Community hospital for sever^days was taken Wednesday to Asheville where she will be a patient at Mission hos pital. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Spangler and Miss Chris Rucker came from Shel by, Friday, and after visiting with Mrs. Tom Wilson for awhile, they, with Lewis Wilson, went to Fon tana Lake for the week-end. They returned home on Monday. v Francis Buchanan Receives Medals At Oak Ridge Francis Buchanan, son of Mrs. M. Buchanan, Jr., of Asheville and the late M. Buchanan, Jr., of Syl va, graduated from Oak Ridge Mil itary Institute last Friday. At this I time he was awarded two- medals, the scholarship medal, correspond ing to a valedictorian's medal in high school, and the medal given to the best commanding officer. Buchanan, Sr. * * * Carolyn Moore Honored At Two Parties ! i Miss Carolyn Moore, who will leave with her mother soon to make their home in Glendale, Cal., has been guest of honor at two parties during the past week. On Friday everting Misses Edith Moore, Patsy Bucknea, and Audrey Jane Jones, entertained with a party at the Community house as a going away courtesy for Carolyn. For entertainment the children played games and danced. The yoQng hostesses assisted by Mrs. W. L. Jones, Mrs. Dan Moore, Mrs. D. M. Hall, and Mrs. Enloe Moore served candy, cookies, ice cream and coca-colas. r Carolyn received a number of going-away gifts. About forty five childrer^Uaitended the party. On Saturday afternoon at, 3 o' clock her mother, Mrs. Enloe Moore' and Mrs. Jack Allison were host-* esses at a party honoring Carolyn on her eleventh birthday anniversary. Games were* played j eleven candles was served with ice* cream, candy, nuts, and punch. The honoree received a number of lovely gifts which she then opened. The guest list included Edith Moore, Audrew Jane Jones, Anne Cathev, Shirley Hartmann, Mary Morris, Bessta Bryson, and Rachel Karp. * * * Elizabeth Pettit Has Birthday Party Little Miss Elizabeth Pettit was honored on her fifth birthday an niversary on last Wednesday eve ning at a party given by her moth er, Mrs. C. C. Pettit. The guests were greeted at the door by Eliza beth and her mother and invited into the living room which was at tractively arranged with pink and white carnations. For entertainment movies were shown and a drawing contest held. Maurene Cope and Kenneth Cope were named winners of the con test. The children were then invited into the dining room, daintly arranged with pink roses and blue larkspur. The dining table was centered with the birthday cake, flanked with pink candles and pink rose buds. While Elizabeth blew out the can dles on her cake, the guests' sang "Happy Birthday". The children were seated at small tables and served cake, ice cream, mints andl iced drinks. The color scheme of' pink and white was carried out in! the refreshments. Balloons were given as favors. While in the din ing room Elizabeth opened her many lovely gifts. Club Has Meeting Tuesday The Cashiers Home Demortstra tion club held its regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Sam Power on Tuesday, May 25 with Mrs. Sam Bryson, president, in charge. The .secretary reported that the repair work had been done on the clinic building and the bills paid. The Jane McKimmun Lnnn Fund money and the dues were turned over to Miss Johnston. * Miss Johnston gave a very in teresting report on the curb mar ket at Bethesda, Md., which will' be a great help in setting-up the curb market in Sylva. She also led a most interesting discussion on strawberries. She suggested the most profitable ones to grow and gave recipes on how to use them. R. Buch anan were called to Danville, Ky., last Thursday to be with their mother, Mrs. "Sadie J. Long, who suffered a fractured hip when she fell at the home of her daughter, Mrs. \V. H. Carter, in Danville on Tuesday.
