However, it is to be taken into

MURPHY TAKES TWO !
FROM SYLVA BY 19-1
AND 6 TO 5
The Murphy Independents
swamped the Sylva Legionaires in
Murphy Saturday night by a 19-1 j
score and came from behind Sun
day at Sylva to edge a 6-5 defeat
onto the Sylva club.
In Saturday night's game, Jim
Cunrlingham, a S y 1 v a boy,
pitched the victory for Murphy, i
The game was a 7-inning affair.!
Murphy had two big innings?the!
third and fourth, in which they
scored 8 and G run- receptively.!
Cole and Hemprvll homered in the
third.
Sylva's only run c;.mi in tne first
when Jack Cur nhighi :n reached
first on RantonV i rr??r. went to
third on Phillips' double and, with
the bases loaded, jc red when Jim
Cunningham wolkeci Harry Duke.
Dugger Cole led the 14 hit at - f
tack for Murphy with a perfect
night," three trips, three hits, and
three runs/ Sylva's five hits were
scattered among their playeps.
Sunday, the Murphy boys had
? i
is trying to do.
With the opening of Summer
School at Western Carolina, the'
Sylva club should return to full
strength. Several members of the
club are students at WCTC and
have been out for a week between
terms. With their returh. the club
should again hit the victory trail
and stay there.
Sunday the fireworks should pop
at Mark Watson Field when the
Legionaires meet Martel Mills
Martel, holding one victory over
j the Sylva club, may find the going
1 rough -when they meet a team
whose umpires recoginize the strike
zone as being from the knees to.
the shoulders instead of from the}
ankles to the top of the head.
The object of this week's column
is not to run the umpires into the
ground but to ask for an even
break when the Legioinaires .go
I onto the road for a game. We are
proud to say that the umpires who
have worked in Sylva this year
watch the ball as it crosses the
plate and do not make a habit of
ducking and dodging when a pit
cher 4 ires a fast ball down the mid
I die.

New Sylva High Coach
JAMES BARNWELL, formerly
o: Ouklev high in Bumcombe;
County, has been named to the
position of head coccn of all ma
jor sports at Sylva high school for;
the coming year. He has also beenj
chosen as D.rector of the City |
Summertime Recreation program J
to come lrom be.iir.d in the seventh
and eighth to win 6-5. Clyde Mil
ler, pitching for Sylva, add Hemp
hill, pitching for Murphy, hooked
up in the first four innings in a
real pitching duel. But in the fifth,
Sylva broke loose with hits and
fcur runs to take the lead. A
walk to Troutman, a single bj'
Duke, an error, a single by Miller,
an infield out by Rector, a triple
by Bob Phillips and a single by
Bill Miln<^ did the damage. In
the sixth,-^ylva scored their last
run on a single by Troutman, an
error and a single by Ralph Rob-'
ertson.
Going into the seventh, Miller
was working on a three hitter, but
an error, triple by Gudger Kirk
land, and a single by Crawford
pushed over two runs, and in the
eighth, Murphy scored four more
to win. Successive singles by Cole
and Ranton, a fielders' choice, and
>a wild pitch through the screen
which scored^ two runs, tied the
g>me at ^5 - a 11. Then little Cosmo
Carnesi homered the next pitch
over the center field fence for the
winning run. Bob Phillips took
the mound for Sylva and put out
the fire.
Pig Troutman took the hitting
honors with a field day ? three
for three, while Duke, Cole, Ranton
and Kirkland had two each.

What 's the Nimblest Number on the highway ?
That's a big question, taking in
a lot of territory, and we'd be
the last to deny you the right to
your opinion.
But, sir ? before you slip up
behind this tidy Super with the
idea of giving it the go-by, better
figure what you Ye up against!
It's big, certainly ? six-persons
roomy and two-tons hefty as it
takes to the road.
But take a look at the size of that
bonnet ? it isn't there just for
show! It's filled to the brim with
straight-eight power ? and a very
special kind of power at that.
For Buick's the only car on the
road today that puts Fireball
power under .your treadle foot.
It's the only car in which pistons
are specially shaped to roll each
tiny fuel charge into a compact
ball that lets loose with extra lift
and surge.
.nd that means that this clean
lined fleetster is exactly what it
looks like ? a star performer.
A nudge on the gas treadle ? and
it's gone with the wind.
A swing of the wheel, and this
low-swung carriage takes curves
with the ease and sureness of
straightaways.
As for rough spots, even they
w on't slow you down, so smoothly
does this beauty take all kinds of
going in its stride.
ou can see, of course, how
steady it is. How the body rides
level and unperturbed while four
soft coil springs soak up the jars
and jolts.
As for handling, well once you've
tried it, we know exactly what
you'll do.
You'll see the nearest Buick
dealer, with or without a car to
trade, and get a firm order in right
now.
