THE CRAFTSMAN'S FAIR OF THE SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS sponsored by the Southern High land Handicraft Guild and South ern Highlands, to be held in Gat linburg, Tennessee, July 26 thru 29, 1948, is an "all-out" effort cn the part of the -membership of the sponsoring groups to bring to the public the very best in South ern Highland Handicrafts. Not only will an attempt be made to show as many examples of go6d| crafts as possible, but there will1 be outstanding craftsmen in every' field to show how as well as to ex-! plain how good craft articles come into being. | The work of these Craftsmen is done both for personal pleasure and ecomcnic help. Arnold Powell, Safety Director for Beacon Manufacturing Com pany, has charge of program ar rangements which will also feature special musical entertainment. The Beacon Company is host to the meeting. Bass and son, Henry L., Jr., of Elberton, Ga., have purchased from Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Closman of this city the lease and equipment of the Caro lina Hotel, on Main street, opposite the Ritz Theatre. Purchase price of the lease and equipment was not reavealed. Mr. and Mrs. Closman operated the Carolina for a number of years, along with other business interests. Mr. Closman is now promoting the Southern States Mining Company, with headquart ers in Tennessee. Mr. Bass was division manager of the Smoky Mountain Trailways at Elbertcn and has been associated with a brother in the hotel busi ness. Henry L., Jr., was postmaster at an office in Alabama before coming to Sylva. Bishop, seaman ap prentice, USN, of Gay, N. C., is serving aboard the destroyer USS Rich, which has visited the fabu lous river city of New Orleans, La., for a four-day break in operation al training. His ship was part of the largest force of combatant snips to enter this port since Admiral! Farragut stormed it during the War between the States. The warships, under the com-i mand of Rear Admiral R. P. Bris coe, USN, include one carrier, five iLstroyers, two destroyer-escorts, and two submarines. They hadj been undergoing intricate task force operations when they paus ed at New Orleans fcr logistic sup port and shore liberty for their sea-weary crews. Daily sight-seeing tours in the Mardi Gras' home town exposed Jean Lafitte's hideaway deep in the Latin section of the balconied French Quarters. The Rich, second warship nam ed after a Navy flyer in the Battle of Midway, was commissioned on Independence Day, 1946. * Coward Reunion To Be Held June 13 On Sunday, June 13, Mr. and Mrs. G. O. Coward, who have re cently come trom Eagle Lake, Fla. *0 spend the summer at their home near Whittier, will be hosts for the ahnual meeting of the Coward reunion, which is held each year on the Sunday nearest June 12, the birthday of the late Mr. Nathan Coward, whose descendants first met on his birthday. Miss Harte Oliver Comes To Jackson As Public Health Nurse Miss Harte Oliver, of Winston Salem, began her duties June 1 as public health nurse for Jack son County, working through the county health office. Miss Oliver h. s had much experience in public iualtii work, having served over seas with the U. S. .Army Nurse Corps for 18 months, was then Rationed at Moore General hps pi'.al at Swannanoa and did public health work in Graham county. Miss "Oliver has announ \ that she will be in the office of the hialtn department in Sylva each Tuesday "until 3:30 p. m. for general clinic work, and each Saturday from 9 a. m. to 12 noon. On the first Tuesdays in each month she will be at the community health center at Cashiers from 11 a. m. to 3 p. m.
