SPORTS BRIEFS IN DRTAII, By BOBBY TERRELL 11 Legionaires Are Running Hot Streak Who says the Sylva Legionaires are not one of the strongest semi pro clubs in the Western part of cf the state: Well, sir, if that's your feeling, just put it under your hat and keep it there. Don't make the mistakes of saying it around town. From the showing the Sylva lads made over the week-end, they look like they can hold their own with anything in this part of this state and several states adjoining. Until Saturday, the Legionaires had not won a single shutout game. Then everything broke loose and came two straight. Twenty con secutive scoreless innings have been thrown by Sylva hurlers. Old Reliable Hush Sumner hurled one ci the best game^ we've over seen him slin& Monday when he shut out Habersham Mills 6-0. And K^bersham is one of the hottest i club-; in the South Carolina-Geor-' gia Industrial league. There's J. B. Beam's three hit jcb against Cherokee Mills of Knoxville, Tennessee, last Sunday also. Anyone who pitches a base-' ball game and allows only three1 m_n to reach base, has done some-1 th'ng special; and that's exactly what Long John did. Of coursey^oth pitchers receive ed excellentTp^cking from the res't cl tne club. I No errors were made behind and only two behind Rush. If the Legionaires play that brand of ball for the thirty or more remaining games this sea son, they won't lose many more. The Legionaires might well be called a farm club for the Marion aggregation of the WNC loop since1 3 cf Sylva's best pitchers have been! signed by that team. First was southpaw Odell Griffin who pitch ed for the Legionaires at the first of last season; next was Lawson Brown, the big sidearm fireballer, who hurled for Sylva all last sea son; and last was Warren Deyer jrond, the curveball specialist, who won 4 out of 5 games for Sylva th s year. We're pulling for all three cf them, and if you follow your Asheville paper, you can see that the Mauraders have pulled from | eigiuri piact in tn^ league stand* . ings to sixth in the last week or so I unci toev are now only 4 1-2 games ? out Oi the first division.
