For The Women Society News and Club Activities Phone IK) Cooke?Corbin Engage ment Announced Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Lee Cooke of Asneville have announced the en gagement of their daughter, Bar bara Jo Cooke, to John Frank Cor bin, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Corbin of Sylva. Miss Cooke with her parents formerly lived in Sylva and is a graduate of Sylva High school and attended the Asheville School for Technicians. Mr. Corbin graduated from Sylva High school, attended Clemson College and Western Carolina Teachers College. He served for two years with the U. S. Navy dur ing World War II. The wedding will take place September 1. * * * Mrs. Cunningham Hostess For Bridge Club On last Thursday evening Mrs. Martin Cunningham was hostess for the regular meeting of the Thursday Nite Bridge club at her home in the Allison apartment. For the evening's play Mrs. Dan Hooper scored high and Miss Nancy Allison made second high score >and were awarded the respective jprizes. Others pilaying were Mrs. Rudy Hardy, Mrs. Clyde Rector, and Mrs. Ned Morris, Miss Lou Elsie Parker, Miss Mary Henson and Miss Dot Tallent. Following the games Mrs. Cun ningham served a salad course to her guests. * * * D. M. Halls Honor Mr. and Mrs. Rowlson Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Hall, Jr., were hosts at a small dinner party on Tuesday evening as a courtesy for Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Rowl son, who were recently married in Plorida and are visiting her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Brown at Cullowhee. . The hcuse was decorated with mixed summer flowers and . in the dining room a color scheme of green and white was carried out. The table was centered with an arrangement of white gladioli and clematis, flanked on either side with candelabra holding tall white Mrs. Wise Hostess For I Sylva Woman's Club Rev. W. Q. Grigg, pastor of the Sylva Methodist church, was the guest speaker when the Sylva Woman's club met in monthly session on Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. W. T. Wise. He spoke on the subject, "Personal Counseling." Miss Hicks Wilson, the president, was in charge during the business session. A number of matters of vital interest to the club were dis cussed and voted on, one of these being a donation to the Jackson County public library. As the sponsoring organization of the cub scouts, it is urged that j each member be present for the next public meeting of the cubs, their leaders and committee mem bers to be held Friday, September 10. During the social hour Mrs. Wise served a salad course. * * * Ruby Daniel Circle Has Monthly Meeting On last Thursday evening Mrs: Porter Scroggs was hostess for the regular monthly - meeting of the Ruby Daniel circle of the Wom an's Missionary Society of the Sylva Baptist church. Thp .sident, Mrs. Lee Walk er, ...iducted the business session, and two new members, Mrs. Tom my Davis and Mrs. Robert Ensley, were welcomed into the circle. The personal service work for the month was for the local hos pital for which the group purchas ed and presented a bedspread. Mrs. Charles Campbell was in charge of both the devotional and the program on the Baptist Wom an's Work in South America. She I was assisted by Mrs. Felix Potts ! and Mrs. Cicero Bryson. The hostess served cake and I coffee. i tapers. The guests places were marked with white place cards.tied ! with green bows. The guest list included Mr. and Mrs. Rowlson, Mr. and Mrs. Frank i Brown, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Jack | Allison. Married August 4th m Mrs. Hugh Brendle Jenkins, who was, before her marriage on Aug ust 4, Miss Iris Sitton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Sitton, of Whit tier. She and Mr. Jenkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Jenkins, also of Whittier, were married in the Methodist parsonage with the Rev. O. E. Thorne, pastor, officiating Sylva H. D. Club Has Annual Picnic On Monday morning*^^^? .30 o'clock 15 members of the Sylva Home Demonstration club met at the home of Mrs. C. R. Moody for their annual picnic. The members brought picnic lunches and a bountiful dinner was served. In the afternoon a business ses sion was held under the direction of Mrs. Isola Thomas, the presi dent. All old business matters were cleared up and the club voted to make a donation of $25.00 to both the Jackson County public library and to the curb market. The program was omitted for this month as this was the social meeting of the year. , * * * Annie Cowan Circle Met With Mrs. Buchanan Mrs. M. Misses Era and Esther McGinnis have returned to their home in Commerce, Ga., after spending! several weeks with their sister, Mrs. J. H. Patterson, and family. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Cooper and son, Pat, will leave today for their home in Lest Creek, West Vir ginia, af%ter spending the past two weeks with Mrs. Cooper's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Patterson. While here they also visited friends and relatives in Watkinsville and Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. H. T. Hunter and two daughters, Misses Martha Lou and Elizabeth Ann, returned to their home at Cullowhee Saturday after spending a few weeks in Los An geles, Calif., with their daughter and sister, Mrs. Richard Pettit, and Mr. Pettit. Mrs. E. E. Brown has gone to Newport News, Va., where she will visit her daughter, Mrs. Emerson Phillips, and Mr. Phillips. She will then go to Pollocksvile, N. C., to visit another daughter, Mrs. C. S. Williams, and family. Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Rowl Misses Stillwell Entertain College Group -* Misses Elizabeth and Joy Still well entertained a group of college friends at their home on Saturday evening. The spacious veranda under rustic lantern light, was open for dancing. Bridge tables were set up in the living roorrf" and for that social j chat the music room provided the suitable atmosphere. Out-of-town guests for the oc casion were Zeb Jones, of Monroe, N. C. college, and Charles Griffin and Colbert Smith, of Greensboro, both members of the Sigma Phin Epsilon fraternity of Duke Uni versity. the absence of the president, Mrs. Harry Hastings presided over a routine business session, Mrs. W. R. Enloe presented the devotional on the theme, "Christ, the Ongoing Companion of Our Way," and Mrs. George Evans had the program. Her topic was "Thy Way in Puerto Rico." Cannon at th?;ir home in Dillsboro. James C. Cannon, Jr. left Tues day for French Lick, Indiana, where he will attend the annual meeting of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Enroute home the latter part of the week he will visit in Louisville, Kentucky. Bruce Hall has returned to Hat tiesburg, Miss after visiting his sister, Mrs. Jack Allison, and oth er relatives for a week. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Aberger and daughter, Nell, of Orlando, Fla. are guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Cannon. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ellis were overnight guests of Mr. and Mrs.j C. E. Tompson, Monday. Mr. Yonnally has returned to Grand Island but Mrs. Yonnalfy remained for a long er visit. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Gerhardsfein of Batavia, Ohio, who have been visiting her father, J. B. Ensiey, and Mrs. Ensiey, and her sister, Mrs. H. M. Hooper, have gone to Georgia and Florida for visits after which they will return to Sylva for another stay before returning to their home.
