At Mor ganton, a Labor Day calvacade will' open the section's new scenic high way (NC 181) to the Blue Ridge Parkway with all-day ceremonies. On the coast, in the midst of two sportfishing contests at Wilming ton-Southport and Mcrchead City Beaufort with sailfish and 20 other species already recorded, 50 pri vate yachts line up Sunday morn ing (Sept. 5) in Morehead City's yacht basin for an overnight cruise and shore-entertainment to New Bern and return, the first annal TAR AFLOAT event. In the Nirth east, The Lost Lost Colony, also in the midst of spectacular runs of sportfish at Oregon Inlet, reaches the climax of its eleventh year, and Elizabeth City starts its annual 5 day six county Fair on Labor Day. In the middle of the month of the state is very busy opening to bacco auction markets to the tune of the tobacco auctioneer chanting the highest prices of this genera tion Reidsville (10 and 11), Dur ham (4 thru 9), Lexington (13 thru 18), Morganton (15 and 16), White ville (17), and Durham again on the 20tn follow through with cele brations ranging from tobacco jubilees to ccunty fairs. Cleveland County, on the 17th and 18th, gathers in Shelby to cele brate its nationally pre-eminent crop in its annual Cotton Festival followed, the week of the 21st, by the Cleveland County fair. C. ?Thirty-eight years ago this mcnth the first radio message was transmitted from an airplane to a radio str.t:on. It was sent by a Canadian pilot. J. A. D. McCardy, while flymg over an air meet at Sheephead Bay, New York. The message was as follows: "An other chapter in aerial achieve ment is recorded in the sending of] this wireless message from an air plane in flight . . . McCardy.,T Today a communication net, as operated by units such as the 190 Airways and Air Communication Service Squadron, Pope Air Force Base, is a far cry from the first I air-ground radio message abbre viated as AACS. the service be came known to pilots as the "guid ing hand on the ground", and serv ices military and civilian airplanes throughout the world. During July cf this year the AACS unit at Pope made 19,022 contacts with aircraft in flight and on the ground. These contacts were made by the radio range, the air-ground radio station, control tower and the ground control ap proach system. The information contained in the contracts consist ed of such information as weather reports, landing and take-oy in structions, status of airports, blind landing instructions and any in formation which might be useful rowed a week from September this year: among others waiting to be announced, Rocky Mount, War renton, and Fayetteville have agricultural and industrial fairs slated Sept. 27 thru Oct. 2. R Calhoun, Cum-; mandirg Oil'icer of the Sylva Army: and Air Force Recruiting Station announced today that former mem. bers of the Women's Army Corps who were discharged under hon orable conditions between 1 May and 8 July, 1948 inclusive, are now eligible to apply for immediate reenliitment in the Women's Army Corps. The sergeant stated that those reenlistmg under this direc tive must apply for reenlistment within ninety days of discharge in order to be eligible for reenlist ment allowance and grade held at time ol discharge. The sergeant also stated that a new prcfessional caret r has been opened to women ?a career in national defense. Women are now an integral part of the National Security Program of all the services.
