ANNUAL WHITE CANE
SALE, MEMBERSHIP
DRIVE TO START 20TH
The North Carolina State As
sociation for the Blind, which wasj
created by North Carolina Lions
Clubs, will ccnduct its annual
White Cane Sale and Membership
Enrollment drive beginning Sept
ember 20th and continuing through
September 25th, it was announced
today by Lion Roy Reed, presi
dent of the local Lions Club.
Dave Mauney, Jr., of Cherry
ville, a former District Governor
of Liens, will direct the campaign
which will have a $25,000 goal and
will be conducted from the moun-1
tains to the sea.
Lions and Lionesses throughout
the state again are cooperating
in the drive, which will have as
its aim the raising of funds for
tne Association's widespread pro
gram of aid to the blind and con
servation ol sight, the latter proj
ect featuring free examinations,'
eye glasses and eye operations for
underprivileged children.
Mr. Rudy H^rdy; who will serve
as local Chairman of the White
Cane sale and Membership en
rollment, announced today that
the local Lions Club had ur.ani-1
mouslv endorsed tr.e ci moa.gn,
and that its members, assisted by'
Lionesses and other local friends
of the blind, will conduct an ac
tive drive here during the Sept
ember 20th-25th campaign period
The buttons will be sold directly
to the general public. They will
be exchanged for ncminal contri
butions and there is no limit to the
amount interested button pur
chasers may contribute. Any a
mount from 10 cents up.
In addition to the sale ot White (
Cane buttons, the Lions will en- |
roll as members in the State As
scciation lor an annual fee of $1,
and will seek memberships and ^
renewal of present memberships (
from indiv.duals interested in the I
welfare of the blind and conser-' <
vation of sight. I i
One-third of the funds derived
from the sale of the White cane
buttons will be retained by the,'
local club, Rudy Hardy said, for i
use in the program of its ownjl
blind aid and sight conservation; (
committee, which is the major' ^
project committee of all Lions' .
Clubs. Aid xto the blind and sight
' i
conservation long have constituted ( '
the major project of the Interna- <
tional Association of Lions Club i
The local club makes its work for' (
the blind its major activity during1, |
the year. '?
Rudy Hardy said the remaining
two-thirds of the proceeds from'
the sale of the White Canes, to- j
gether with all of the funds de
rived from membership fees in
the state assoc.ation, would go to
the association toward meeting its
$25,000 goal for the 1948 cam
paign.
The Association expends its
funds chiefly in providing eye op-!
erations and hospital care in sight
conservation cases, Rudy Hardy
said, adding that ether phases of
.the statewide program include: ex
aminations and eyeglasses for
children; supplies for blind per
sons taking vocational and home
training; establishing deserving
blind persons in business enter
prises, teaching Brail, and other-!
wise rendering every aid possible
in blind and sight conservation
cases that otherwse would suffer
from tragic neglect.
Rudy Hardy urged local friends
of the blind to get behind the White
Cane Sale and Membership drive
as solidly as possible so that the
local community can make an ex
cellent showing in the over-all
statewide campaign.
Australia and New Zealand ex
ported mere meat in 1947 than in
1946.
