This group, attended the American Legion National Convention in
Miami at this time.

Prizes totaling $1,500 will be
awarded to student and teacher
winners in the second annual Rur
al Life Contest sponsored by South
ern Agriculturist magazine, ac
cording to L. R. Harrill, State 4-H
Club leader*.
The top student winner will re
ceive $100 and an expense-paid,
five-day trip by air to Washing
ton and New York. The runner-up
will also receive the five-day trip
as well as $50 in cash."Sixteen ad
ditional cash prizes will &lso be
awarded.
First and second prizes for
teachers will be $200 and $100.
To participate in the contest, a
student must write an article of
not more than 500 words on the
solution of some problem in rural
living and mail it to Contest Editor,
Southern Agriculturist, postmark
ed not later than March 1, 1949.
Entries received by January 1 will
receive a bonus of five points.
A teacher may enter the contest
by writing a short play or pageant

begin at Pine Creek church on

Funeral Services Held
For Mrs. Cordell
Funeral services were held Tues
day afternoon, Oct. 26, at Qualla
Methodist church for Mrs. Jack
Coixjill, 26. The Rev. E. O. Thorne,
pastor, and Rev. S. T. McGinnis.
officiated. Mrs. Cordell passed a
way Sunday, Oct. 24, at 8:20 p.m.
at the C. J. Harris hospital where
she had been a patient for the past
five weeks, having been ill since
January.
Serving as pallbearers were: Prit
chard Smith, of Franklin,. Law
rence Cordell, Wade Cordell, Glen
Cordell, Frank Hayes, and Buddy
Smith.
In charge of the flowers were:
Mrs. Maxine Bowles, Mrs. Wilma
Boyer, Mrs. Frances Webb, Mrs.
Louise Smith, Miss Melba Cordell,
and Miss Virginia Cordell.
Garrett's Funeral home in Way
nesville was in charge of services.
Surviving Mrs. Cordell are the
illustrating the solution of some
problem in rural living. Entries
must be in by March 1.
Entries in both student and
teacher divisions will be graded
on the following basis: 50 points
for subject matter, 25 points for
logic, 10 points for neatness, and
15 points for literary composition.
Schools which have not received
bulletins concerning the contest
may obtain them by writing the
sponsoring magazine.
Last year's winner in the South
wide contest was a North Carolina
girl, Anita Bolinger of Vale, Lin
coln County.
