Meeting The United Daughters of the Confederacy met with Mrs. Dan Tompkins on Thursday afternoon with 14 members present. Miss Bertha Cunningham, president, presided over a short business ses sion. The program planned for this meeting was suspended and a memorial service honoring Mrs. E. L,. McKee was held, with Mrs. J. F. Freeze in charge. C Halcyon Woman's Club Has Christmas Party There" were 18 of the 20 mem bers present on last Wednesday evening for the annual Christmas party of the Halcyon Woman's club. They met at the Jarrett Springs hotel for dinner after which they went to the home of Mrs. Wade Wilson for the party and dessert. Mrs. Roger Dillard presided over a short business ses sion. During the social hour Christ mas carols were sung, and gifts vveVe exchanged. Mrs. Wilson served a delicious dessert of plum pudding with hard ?auce and coffee. # * * Mrs. Montieth Has T.E.L. Class Meeting On Thursday morning, Dec. 9, the T.E.L. class of the Scotts Creek Baptist church met with Mrs. Ida Montieth at her home in Sylva. Covered dishes were brought and a bountiful dinner was enjoyed' at noon by all present. In the afternoon Mrs. Clyde Fisher, vice president, presided in the absence of the president. Rev. T. F. Deitz had the opening pray er and Mrs. Wes Harris gave the devotional. During the social hour gifts were exchanged and secret pals were revealed. New pals were chosen for the coming year. There were 24 members present for the meet ing and 3 visitors. The meeting was dismissed with a prayer by the Rev. George C.j Snyder. Several interesting games, di rected by Claudia, were enjoyed by the group. Refreshments of the beautiful birthday cake and oranges, and hot chocolate were served. Carl received many useful gifts. C. * * * Cullowhee Woman's Club Has Meeting And I Christmas Party The Cullowhee Woman's club held their regular monthly meeting and annual Christmas party Tues day evening in the parlors of Moore dormitory on the WCTC Campus. About *80 persons were present including members, their husbands, and guests. The main project for the month was "Care", and Mrs. John Worth McDevitt, club president, an nounced that funds for nine "Care" packages had been raised. Musi? was the theme for the | evening's program and a delight- ? ful program was arranged by the committee, Mrs. Margaret T. Jones, chairman, Miss Kate An derson, and Mrs. Glenn Ruff. The WCTC mixed octette presented, beautifully, eleven^ carols in a cantata, "The Child Jesus", by Joseph Cloky and Hazel Kirk. | 'with Walter H. Cupp as director] and accompanist. Members oT~thrr octette were Virginia Barnwell. Velma Ramsey. Kathleen Moss, Joan Rogers, Robert Bowers, Bronson Matnay, Herbert Foster, and Charles West. The students Save an excellent performance and received an enthusiastic round of applause. Following the Can tata everyone then joined in the singing of several favorite Christ-! mas carols with Mr. Cupp direct ing. Attractive corsages of spruce, red ribbon, and tiny bells were given as favors. Delicious refresh ments consisting of plum pudding, coffee, and nuts were served by the hostesses,. Mrs. C. F. Dodson and Mrs. David Brown, co-chair men; Miss Fannie Goodman, Mis? Anne Albright, Mrs. D. M. Hall, and Mrs. Stedman Mitchell. * * * The Wesleyan Service Guild Meets The Wesleyan Service Guild held their regular meeting Mon day with the president, Dr. Nor cella Wilson, who presided over the routine business session. Mrs. John H. Wilson de votional. A program of ChrT^K. mas carols was enjoyed by the Guild members present. Mrs. Wilson served refreshments of cake and molded ice cream. Funeral Service Held For Mrs. Wiggins Mrs. Betsy Bradley Wiggins, who had been an invalid for the past five years, passed away at her home at Glenville, Monday, Dec. 13. Funeral services were held at the Glenvihe Baptist church Tuesday at 2:00 p. m. with the Rev. L. O. P;osser officiating. Mrs. I VViggins was o^rn Jan. 2, 1863. Surviving are four children, J Naihaniel B. VViggins of Sylva, Ed j and Amos Wiggins of Washington; ? one daughter, Mrs. Martha ?harpe I of Cashiers, lb grandchildren and j four great grandchildren; three I sisterfc, and one brother, John I Bradloy oi Gienville. * * * Presbyterian Young 'People Have Meeting The young people of the Presby terian church meet Sunday even ing at the home of Mrs. N. Miss Libby' Anne Dillard, secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting. The group sang Christmas carols with Miss Eddie Lou Terrell at the piano. Christmas Services To Be Held At Sylva Methodist Church The Christmas worship services of the Sylva Methodist church will be held on Sunday at the 11:00 o'clock service. A special offering will be taken for the Children's Home at this time. On Sunday afternoon at 5:15 the presentation of "Chorus In the Skies" -will be giv en by the choir. White Christmas gifts will be re ceived at the church any time during the day. Ctn Thursday evening, Dec. 23,' ;it 7:30 the Sunday School Christ-1 mas program?wyi be given. The Rev. Mrs. Sadie Bryson O'Kelly has returned to Sylva from Asfterille to make her home. She is now operating for the Bon-Ton Beauty Shop, where she was employed for several years prior to going to Asheville. * * * North Carolina seed corn pro ducers this year almost doubled their 1947- certified hybrid corn acreage.
