During the first Yiie months of this year, 508 per sons were killed and 5,353 others were injured as a result of 11, 323 traffic accidents, the Motor Vehicle Department reported to day. Fatalities showed a 15 per cent reduction over the same periot ltal of 6, 870 accidents, killing 416 persons and injuring 4,091 others, occur red on rur: 1 highways. In cities and towns, there were 4,453 ac cidents, with 92 deaths and 1,^2 injuries. ? More persons between the ages of 25 and 34 were involved in ac cidents than any other age group, and more commercial drtvers were involved than any other occupa tional group of drivers. In 1947, more farmers were involved. Com mercial drivers include chauf feurs, bus, taxi, truck and trac tor drivers, and delivery men. 4 LOOKING THEM OVER IN JACKSON By Sgt. It hasn't snow ed yet. But, look out! Looks very much as if we are due for some Jack Frost weather soon. Wearing civilian clothes and a quiet grin on his face, Richard E. Cowan sauntered into the Post Office to see how things were getting along. Cowan is now a Private 1st Class in the U. S. Air F?rce (enlisted last September). He completed his basic training recently and is now home in Syl va for a ten-day furlough. (Men in service are now permitted to wear civilian clothes while on furlough or when off-duty and away from Army Post or Air Force Base.) Private 1st Class Cowan's new assignment will be at Boiling Air Force Base, Washington, D. C. .Have been informed that Fred L. King (formerly of near Whit tier) is stationed in Japan with the 1st Cavalry Division, U. S. Army Occupation Forces. Having enlisted last May, he is now liv ing in grand style, being quartered in the Palace of former Premier Tgjo. Former resident of Sylva and former Navy man of four years service, Avery A.. Bradley has been cruising up and down Sylva in the uniform of a U. S. Army Para trooper. Enlisted in August, he completed parachute jump train ing in Fort Benning, Georgia; home now on furlough and looking for ward to his first assignment to the 504th Parachute Infantry Regi ment, 82nl Airborne Division, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
