Rev. Lawrence Crawford officiated. Mr. Nicholson, who was 86 years old, had been in ill health for 3 years, but he worked up until a week before his death, which was caused by a heart condition. A retired farmer, he was born in South Carolina, coming to Cullowhee at the age of 13. In 1883 he was married to Mary Hicks Ashe.
