Gen. John Gill. Receiver of the C. F. & Y. V., Col. Talcott, expert Engineer, of Richmond, Capt. J. W. Fry, General MaDager, and Mr. H. L. Fry, Chief En gineer of the C. F. & Y. V., arrived in the city this morning in Capt. Fry's pri vate car. They spent a few hours and then left for Greensboro. Fight in Flea Hill. Constable Autry ran into a free fight in Flea Hill last night, and arrested the following combattauts: Julia Patrick, Lena Holmes, Matilda Williams and Chas. Williams. The many friends here of young Mr. Fife will be grieved to read the following from Monday's Charlotte News: Prayers were offered in the city churches yesterday for the recovery of Mr. Will Fife, son of evangelist Fife, who is very sick with fever. Horrible Accident. West Bass, a workman on the Phoenix cotton factory, met with a terrible accident this morning. He was at work on the building when he fell through a hole and striking: one end of a sh6rt, loose plank with nis feet, the other end, which was sharp pointed, flew up and entered his abdomen, exposing the intestines. Dr. McGougan who at tended him-says that though badly hurt the unfortunate man will probably recover. Rerirat at Campbellton. Rev. Dr. Nash is engaged in a revival in Campbellton. Rev. Mr. Parker has been holding a meeting down there for a week, assisted by Revs. A. McCullen and W. H. Whitaker. Dr. Nash went down yesterday and last night to assist. There was a large congregation last night, and much interest manifested. There were about 20 who came forward for prayers, and many others who knelt in the con gregation. The'services are held at 5 and 8:30 P. M. Cumberland Court. Notwithstanding the dreadfully hot weather the work of the court goes smoothly on, and when night comes those who have been actors on the scene the Jude who has to keep his head cool, the lawyers who have to brow beat and plead alternately, the witnesses who have to re main placid under a storm of entangling questions, the jury who have to be locked up in a close room to consult, and finally the sheriff and his officers who have to be constantly runnir,gr about shouting "order in court," and lookiog after witnesses and prisoners wonder how they survived it all. The following cases were tried yesterday: M. A. Gillis, assault with a deadly wea pon. Guilty. Judgment not yet pro nounced William West, assault and battery. Guilty, with recommendation of mercy. Judgment not pronounced. This morniug Isaac Branch was tried for disposing of mortgaged crop and found not guilty. R. H. Beaver, alias Snodgrass, pleaded guilty this afternoon to a charge of forgery, and was sentenced to 2 years on the Chat ham roads. Henry Ivy appeared before Judge Star buck this morriiDg in the custody of the sheriff of Montgomery county and applied for a writ of habeas corpus. He is charge ed with killing a man named Street in Montgomery last month. Tho Judge heard the testimony of several witnesses who ac companied the prisoner. He continued the hearing until to night. In the case of State vs. Henry Simpson for rape a special venire of 75 jurors were drawn this morning. The case is set for trial to morrow. The trial of the case of State vs. Bishop Holmes charged with murder is set for Thursday. A special venire of 75 jurors were drawn this morning. To Open the Campuign. Hon. R. B. Glenn and Hon. D. H. Mc Lean, two of the finest orators in the State, and neither of whom needs an in troduction to a North Carolina audience, will address the citizens of Fayetteville and surrounding country, Thursday night under the auspices of the Bryan and Wat son Club. The following letter has been received, which explains itself: Narragansett, (Rhode Island), July 25, 1896. Editor Fayetteville Observer: From your paper, received to-day, I heard for the first time of the distress pre vailing at Manchester, my native place.
