The community was grieved by the news which came from Cumberland last night that the Cumberland Mills Manu facturing Company had been closed by a process issued by Judge Starbuck in chambers, and served by the Sheriff yes terday. We learn, upon inquiry, that a judg ment for $7,000 was obtained by the At lantic National Bank of Winston. Universal sympathy (in which the Ob server shares most heartily) is felt for Mr. W. K. Parker, the admirable gentle man who has been the Company's mana ger for a number of years, and who is also a shareholder. When Mr. Parker assumed control of the management of the mill, it was un der extremely heavy bonded indebtedness, but, in the face of many obstacles, he re duced the indebtedness many thousands of dollars, having paid off the one-third balance due on the original purchase mon ey of the plant ($3,366 66.) In addition to this, Mr. Parker kept up, until recently, interest at 8 per cent, (compounded four times a year) on all debts. This tiouble is the natural result of the hard, times, the falling market and the shrinkage of value in all manufactured products, produced by the gold standard. Hence the Company has been unable to market its products even at cost, and con sequently it has been impossible to meet the demands of the long-time bond-hold ers, who have until now these debts for the mill. been floating People and Their Movements.
