The Party in Honor Bound to Keep itt FRIDAY, NOV. 30, 1900. E. J. HALE, Editor and Proprietor. E. J. HALE, Jr., luiintu ttanaftr. A Short Memory. It is curious what short memories some people have. This deficiency is especially noticeable in writers and speakers who favor the gold standard. A writer in the Atlanta Journal reports ex-Senator David B. Hill as saying a few days- before the meeting of the Kansas City convention : 'The sensible people of our country will never indorse attacks on the courts countenance cheap money or accept popalistio or radical doctrines. Will "never coutenance cheap mones" ! Now, isn't that an edifying thing for a man of Mr. Hill's age to say, who is old enough to remember that the South was defeated and the North made triumphant by the biggest "fake" in cheap money known to our history, to wit : the (intrinsically) abso lutely worthless greenbacks. Acd we imagine that the people of the North consider themselves a part of "the sen sible people of our country' The greenbacks which won the war against the South and fastened the Repub lican party upon us, were the origin of the Popnlistic idea ormoney made to order and "per capita." The World Hatei Traiton. Raleigh Post. November 26. Hon. B. M. Furman, DEAR SIR: -I received your kquiry concerning the recent primaty and my views as to primaries in the futnr e. 1 hesftated some time, doubting whether I should express an opinion about a matter upon which I may soon vote, but af ter considering the question care fully, I am satisfied it is no longer an open question. The State Democratic platfoim says in plain language: "We favor the enactment of laws by the hlv nrovidiner tor next vjtouBi ai r , . - - fiia holding of primary elections for be nomination of State and county officers, Representatives and United States Senators." m I accepted nomination for office knowiog this to be in the platform. In .u J. T pfpnded mv party and spoke in favor of its platform and dec larations. I cannot run for office on a platform and then vote against it after I am elected. , For me there is no option, i ieei that I am in honor bound to vote to carrv out the promise of my party. If the-"legalized primary (which by the way we have not yet tried) turDS out to bo unsatisfactory, the next State convention can and will recommend its repeal. Oar laws are not like those of the Medes and Persians. At any rate I am old fashioned enough to believe a party platform means something more than a mere f-or, Tt ia thfl solemn promise of a party to the voters of the btate. its promises must be kept. Its remedies must be given a trial. Sincerely vours, E. C. Beddingfield. The Socialise Democracy. Aeheyille Citizen. A recent dispatch from Manila says : "General Macabolos, a former revo lutionary chief, is prepared to start in pursuit of Aguinaldo with 100 picked natives, supported by American troops. Other Fillipinos will be used by the Americans in campaigning in the country. Their offers have not been formally made, but they are ready if the authorities will accept their ser vices." Every American child has been taught to hate Benedict Arnold. No other name in all history, with the ex ception of Judas Iscariot, arouses more scorn in the minds of the people than that of the man who, a little more than 100 years ago, agreed to sell his country for ten thousand pounds ster ling and a brigadier generalship in the British army. When the war was over, and the people that Arnold Detrayea were free, even those who had bought the traitor despised him. An English man in the house of commons, in the midst of a speech, stopped and ex claimed : "Mr. Speaker, I cannot go on while this man is in the house," pointing to Arnold, who had a seat in the gallery. King George III tried to introduce the outcast to a sturdy Scottish earl, but the proud noble turned away, refusing his hand, say ing, "I know General Arnold, and I hate traitors." Will the great American govern ment buy traitors in the Philippines and make it impossible for rising genera tions to be taught to loathe them as in the past ? We shall see. Salisbury Truth-Index. We based several appeals, before the election, to all conservative men to sua tain the conservative Democratic party which Mr. Bryan led as a means of ohecking the growth of socialistic Dem ocracy. Mr. McKinley's re election will give it a wonderfal impetus. We do notknow the number of votes cast for Dsbs; but it will be found that the number was considerable. The elec tion of Mr. Bryan would have been a wet blanket upon socialistic Democracy. Of course the grand old Democratic party is still alive and will still, by its conservatism and advocacy of the right3 and interests of the people, stand as a break water against ex tremes of all kinds. But, if the party shall become only another name for Republicanism, many or tnose, wno have supported it, will go to the So cialistic Democracy, and many then will go to the Republican party as that which gives the better promise of ad vantage. If the Democracy stands firm upon its principles, maintaining its organiza tion, without surrendering the leader ship to those who have either refused to aid it or have voted against its nom inees, yet, holding out the hand of welcome to any that will come, and treating those who may accept the in vitation as equals, all agreeing that the majority shall rule and that all will submit to its decisions, then the conservative Democracy may yet save the Republic. The Beaetion Beipecling Primaries. Wilson News. The late Senatorial primary was not a legalized primary. It was by party consent. Let the legislature provide for legalized primaries ana omy iu man with a clean record will bob up for office. If he has a private skeleton in his closet he will not be anxious to parade it. The Beorganizare' View of the South Raleigh News and Observer The Chicago Chronicle is the recog nizfd leader in the fight to reorganize the Democratic party by putting the Clevelands and the Carlisles in the sad dle. It started out by denouncing the Southern Democrats tor enacting con dments that eliminate most of the negro vote. That was offensive enough, but the Chronicle is determined to rub it in. Its last utter anc is this : m "Without arrogance, without malice, without departure from the truth in the smallest degree, it should be said and said plainly that the people of the Nonh are better fitted by character, by intelligence and by industry than those of any other section to rule the Government. They have ruled it for 40 years and nothing is more impressively "written in the books of fate than the fact that they are to rule it for many generations to come. m "The people at the North have their faults, as every people must have, but such as they are, with the light given to them, they are the people to whose judgment all qaestious of poli tics must be referred and to whose de oision all parties must bow." That is the dish of which Southern Democrats are asked to paitake, and after eating, to swear they love it. NflTt to Mark Hanna and his Presi dent the happiest man over the election results appears to be Lord Salisbury, who at the lord mayor's banquet, took occasion to rejoice mightily over the re-election of McKinley, which he hailed as the triumph of "the cause of civilization and commercial honor." Atlanta Constitution The masses of the democracy may be relied upon to follow the lead of none nf those who were found in a re- publican procession on election day. Time has never vindicated treason to any cause. If Mr. Cleveland had stood by the democratic party, which made him what he is, and retired to private station, he might later have reap peared, but he scuttled the ship which carried him, and has voted since for every republican infamy which he once denounced.
