Phone 32-W THE LOST COLONY (Continued from Page One) about robbery. The Island would like to give the show free, but nobody has yet figured out a way to do that. There have been chances to sell shares in it, but the Island has avoided entanglements, and nights when it looks like it’s going to rain, the Island begins to have a headache. It costs a thousand dollars a night to put on the show. The new lighting effects cost $7,000. The organ is another $1,800. Alto gether the show opened this year under a debt of $18,000. The hired participants get their wages first, and no Islander draws a thing un til everybody else has been paid and all the debts paid, and even then his wages will by common consent, be held to a dollar a per formance. If there is anything left after that, it goes into an en dowment fund for next year. And the next. Which is a lot of shop talk, may be, but it answers most of the questions that people ask when they come and put their noses against the screen in the John White House. . . . Somebody a long time since ob served that it is a very small world. . . . This morning Mr. Selden and his mother dropped by for a min ute. Mr. Selden was born in China. His father was a medical missionary, and it must have been there that he learned his colossal patience. His mother is like that, too. She is just home from China . . . And along comes Mr. Jernigan who you will likely see about the Beach Club. “My father was born in Kobe,” he said. “My grand father was consul general there. Tm leaving for China at the end of the summer. Job with my un cle, with Standard Oil.” But around here you are likely to see almost anybody—or anything. LAWYER vs HORSE It was late in the afternoon as the sun was setting over the sand dunes that the battle of the cen tury took place. It was an up and down battle. First the lawyer was on the horse and then on the sand. It was hard to tell who was going to win for awhile because as fast as the horse unloaded himself the lawyer would climb back up. This went on several times un til, at last, the jury gave the vic tory to the horse. From the record this lawyer has made in the court room, it is hard to believe that a horse could defeat him, but facts cannot be changed and the facts are that he was limping for sev eral days afterwards.
