THE MOUNTAINEER-COUBIES, WAYNT3VILLE, N. 0. ItOCK SPRING COMING. ; AGAIN INTO ITS OWN , From a community always at war and seemingly hopelessly ' , , divided over their school mat ters, Rock Spring is returning ' into its own. uniy two years ago this hospitable and substan tial section of our county was looked upon by the teachers as a very "hard" place and, indeed, it was because the people up there were always at wa rover their school and had been for ten . or twelve years. The saying that -"one year is enough for any man was so literally true and the fame ( ?) of the place had become so well known that it was hard for the trustees to secure a nrst grade teacher al though the place paid better than the average country schoo More than one man went there and lost to some extent his rep utation as a teacher and discip ltoarian, having to work hard the next year, perhaps in some nearby school, to gain it back ri i . i nave m mina more tnan one teacher who did so. Before this deplorable state of affairs Rod Spring, or upper Crabtree, was lurnishing more doctors, law yers, teachers and other public men than any other rural sec tion of like area in Haywood county, and it must be gladden J A J 1 1 1 . nig t,o inose wno naa given up nope or rne community ever re turning to its once prosperous ana narmomous state of affairs to now note the gladsome and unmistakable signs of the re appearing. I do no know whether this had been noticed by many of the people of Rock Spring, for some times an out sider is m a better position to ooserve such, however, this com munity is coming again' into its own and of its own will and imi. tation and by virtue of the ef forts of its own citizens alto- gether, for so far as this writer Knows, no credit is due the county Board of Education, Su perintendent of Public Instruc tion nor anybody else. Affairs commenced to turn fr the better fifteen -months ago when all the students of the district were assembled again at one scnooi instead of two (as l&d been the case the year pre vious when the two factions "were at bitter enmity) and have Jbeen growing better every since, But this year witnessed almost complete harmony and copper atjion .when the people there came together at the school house more than once to attend meetings planned to encourage locaj enterprise and foster com munity pride. The best of these occasions was a Community Fair with its agricultural, stock and other departments where - - o prizes ranging irom two or three dollars down to twenty five cents were awarded. The occasion was largely attended aitd was a pronounced success. This exhibit took first-community prize at our county -fair held a week or two later, as did also Rock Spring school exhibit. They have a lady, teacher up there this year who is industri ous, qualified and earnest, but wfth all respect to this teacher (who by the way is a close rehv tive of Uncle Abe's) I dare say that she does not lay any higher ciaim to tnese qualities than a half dozen or more of her pre - deeessors who did not meet with we success she has had. ine gist and truth of the wroie .matter is this: nnrV Spring will be boasting again of yrft profitable lesson by exper- itwce, is coming again into her twe self, and we believe the axe has been buried for all time. We ase goiny to venture th medio. tion that before two years more have passed the neonle nf T?vr.tr Spriny will be boasting again of M good school as thev had in tare days of Dellinger and Melton.
