Fire may route you and your fam ily out any night your wife, children and you may escape and some of you may not. Just use your imagina tion and think what might happen and then get a safety first move on you and have that menace eliminated. Tuesday, October 9, is Fire Preven tlon Day in North Carolina. That ii the day when it is your duty as a loyal citizen to look carefully ovei your pressisea and if there is a rub bish heap there get rid of it. AIJD JOYIIER OUT LETTERS REQUEST CITIZE.N3 AND SCHOOL TEACHERS TO OBSERVE FIRE PREVENTION DAY. YOUNG SEND Urges -That Work Be Continued Throughout Week and Every Day During the Year. Insurance Commissioner James R. Young has issued the following letter to the citizens of North Carolina con cerning Fire Prevention Day, Octo ber 9: The idea of holidays, to the busy man of affairs, comes to be rather a nuisance. When some special day is set apart by the legislature with an intent almost the opposite of a holi day it' is really refreshing. Such a day was provided by the General As sembly of North Carolina when it cre ated "Fire Prevention Day," October 9. This is a day upon which it be comes the special duty of every citi zen to look about him and take in ventory of his hazards. Every citi zen has fire dangers on or about his premises. They are there when he least suspects them. Hence this spe cial day has been designated when the Governor of the State issues a proc lamation to the people asking the proper observance of "Fire Preven tion Day." The proper observance of the day means that each citizen should makt a minute inspection of all the prop erty for which he is directly respon sible. He should look into the closets, attics, basements and outhouses of his home. He should look into the little frequented places about stores, shops, warehouses and storage houses ' and see that things there are not Ila . ble to start a conflagration. In tho schools, teachers, principals and pu- plls should unite in an effort to make conditions such that there will be no loss of property and hazard of life In North Carolina's schools during the coming year. "Eternal vigilance . is the price of Salvation." In this time of stress, when the keynote of every phase of life is the conservation of resources, carelessness which would lead to the destruction of a dollar's worth of property and especially of foodstuffs, ' Is a crime. The executive and administrative ' department of the' State government are giving enthusiastic support to the observation of this Important date and each urges the hearty co-opera tion of every one ' Following Is the proclamation Is sued oy uovernor Bicaeu: "Taxes are a great burden, and a source of constant irritation. The in genuity of statesmen is being taxed to reduce and equalize the tax bar den, and yet the fire tax annually lev- ted upon the State of North Carolina Is practically equal to the entire taxes levied for the sugport of the State government we- may equalise the governmental taxes, but they must be paid by some one. ' Two-thirds of the fire taxes are wholly unnecessary, and are due to lack 6f reasonable care. . . "Realizing this, the General Assem bly of North Carolina has set aside the 9th 'day of October of. each and ev ery year as Fire Prevention Day, and makes it the duty of the Governor to issue a proclamation, urging the peo ple to r. proper observance of the day. "Now, therefore, I, T. W. Blckett. Governor of North Carolina, In ao- cordlnce with this statute, do issue this my proclamation, and I do set aside and designate Tuesday, the 9th , day of October, 1917, as Fire Preven tion Day and do urge all the people to a proper observance of this day tn obedience to the laws of North Carolina. I urge the publlo schools ' of the State and the municipal officers thereof to give proper and formal rec ognition of the day and its meaning. "The General Assembly of your State has done well in naming Octo ber 9th of each year as 'Fire Preven tion Day,' and, as required by law, Governor Bickett has issued a pro lamation setting aside Tuesday, Octo ber 9, 1917, as 'Fire Prevention Day.' It will help the campaign of education being conducted by this department to arouse the people of our State to their individual responsibility in re ducing this tremendous fire waste. Approximately three million dollars worth of property is destroyed by fires In this State each year. - "When it is recognized that two thirds of this loss is preventable, and can vbe avoided with even ordinary care, It would seem to call not only for 'Fire Prevention Day,' but that the people of the State, especially in our cities and towns, should not only observe this day, but use the whole week in inspecting, cleaning up, and doing everything possible to save their property. In fact, I am deter mined that this campaign shall not be stopped until not only 'Fire Pre vention Day, followed by Inspection week, shall be observed in North Car olina, but that the citizens of this State shall realize that this work Is one that calls for their active serv ices on each and every day, of the year. The lose of this property to the State and her citizens is appalling. butIt cannot be considered when It Is remembered that not only property but many lives are tost each year by the,-carelessness of our people in re gard to fires. The people persist In starting fires with kerosene oil, in handling matches carelessly, In using gasoline without regard to its dan ger, and doing many other things that start and feed fires. "It Is hoped-the chiefs of fire de partments and their men of each city and town will undertake a proper preparation for the- observance of this day, and that they will have ac tive aid not only of the municipal au thorities, but also of the superintend ents and teachers of our schools, of fire insurance agents, of business men. of the women's clubs, and in fact 'of all citizens, as each and every one is affected by this 'annual loss of life and property. "Let every one enter Into the full spirit of the day, and continue this j work of inspection and cleaning up J The Lanier and Athenian Lit erary Societies held their usual monthly joint meeting Thurs day, Oct. 25.
