Within the past two or three years the price of coffee has about doubled and another advance is freely predicted by those in po sition to know. These excessive prices are attributed to tiie abso lute control of coffee by trusts at home and abroad. Brazil produces by far the greater part of the wni4Jsj'jj)Jyof coffee and the UniteTlStatesTS-8j4grgt pur chaser. The Brazilinn government buys up all the surplus coffee when there is an over-production, and regulates and restricts the plant ing of coffee trees, so as to always prevent the supply exceeding the demand, and in addition charges a heavy export duty. This consti tntes the first trust and is respon sible for a part of the high prices now charged. After the anio.int allotted to the United States reach es here it is soon gulped up by the home trusts and the unjust tribute they demand furnishes the .second reason for excessive prices. The present prices are a burden to the poorer classes and legislation can not, in this case, give the desired relief. The remedy is to stop us ing coffee It is not a necessity but is becoming more and more regarded as a harmful luxury. No doubt much of the nervousness, biliousness and indigestion so com mon among our American people are due to the use of coffee. If you must have l ave something to drink while eating your meals, try milk or water. You will feel bet ter and live longer and a fat cow looks better on your farm than a fat trust in Xew York City.
