The News -Record. , Published every Friday by ih IESTEB1 ClflOLIM PBI1IIH6 EMIP1IT, , (Incorporated) , GILBERT ft MORROW Publishers " E. ZEPH RAY, EDITOR. On Yf Six o nth a Thraa month i.6o .so .as Entered at teeond-clat matt matter Jane Utk 1907, at the Poetafiee at Marthall. N. C. under the Act of Congret of Martin 3, 1879. FRIDAY. Oct. 81st, 1913 A Thought for the Week. Don't be a "Dirt Dauber." Gome out on the fifth and sixth and help us in the war. against Emperor Mud. r GOOD ROAD ISSUE. We make no apology for having dedicated this issue of The News Record, to the cause of good roads in Madison County. Our reasons are in evidence throughout the pages of the paper. r Governor Craig: Will Work Governor Craig will don his overalls and wield a pick on the fifth and sixth. Governor Craig will work just like any common laborer on these two days. Sure' ly if the Governor of the great state of North Carolina can step down to a job like the rest of us we will all try not to be above the Governor. Locke Craig is a pa triot and will go down in the his tory of our State as the "Good Roads Governor," and we will be known as the - "Road-builders of the Craig Administration." r HE FAVORS MUD AND MISERY Would you go back to the days when there were no railways in this country? Would you go back to the dark days of the past and ride the old stage coach instead of the palace cars of today? , Would you go back to the dark days of the past and ride the perils of the sea on the May-Flower instead of the great Ocean goers of the pre sent time? Would you go back to the days of pine knots and al low candles instead of the glare ing lights of electricity that we have today? If you would then you are in favor of mud and mis- sery for the centuries to come, r The Way of Death, a Muddy Way. ' ''There is a way that seemeth . right unto a man, but the end thereof is death." Such is the law of the spiritual world. I .be lieve that the same law' holds good in the material world. A road of mud may seem rightun to you just because your ancestors travelled that kind of a road and because you are used to it and be cause you would rather . not be bothered about building one that is better.- But listen, my friend, you may travel these ; old rough muddy roads but we declare unto you that "the end thereof is'death," to- development and prosperity. What progressive citizen wants a home away off on some old road full of rocks and - holes and red mud ? But build a road out to the old farm, or anywhere near it, and see how the price of real es tate runs up. The people are going where there are roads, not where there are rocks and mud ness, enterprize and industry to build and develop a country. Good roads will do much to bring them nto JladLson County. ' r I lets Shovel Dirt ! Together. "There is a tide in the affairs of men which if taken at the flood leads on to victory." The tide has struck Madison County and if we ride the tide there is victory ahead for this grand old county. The sails of the ship of progress are wide open, the winds are sweeping our w a y-. Madison County has ridden the crest of a legislative wave and has anchored in her borders a force of convict labor that ought to stimulate her from border to border in the movement for a Central Highway Stupid is the man who dees not realize the great opportunity now presented to our county. Ihe county is investing three hun dred thousand dollars in roads and the state is giving us fifteen miles of good roads. Let the growler growl and the pessimist howl until the howls and the growls shall be lost in the shouts of triumph and victory. We believe in the pro- crrpss of North Carolina, in the n. - progress of Madison County three hundred sixty five days in every year. T h e vUentrai mgnway means the opportunity of a cen tury and a hearty response Jjy every citizen to the request of Governor Craig means the good will of the Governor and the State in our road building. Don't lav down. Be a man' and stand up in this day of opportunity and fight for the enrichment of our county. Come on out on the fifth and sixth of November and lets shovel dirt together. r , Located, a Man A gainst Good Roads. We have not heard of a single man in Madison . County wko is against the good roads movement but there is a fellow - away down in Northern Alabama who says that all this fuss and noise about good roads is the vilest "heresy." He lives away back in the hills, so far back that he has to trav el for forty miles to get to town, it scars him into spasms when he hears the train "blow." He is fellow with a gimlet head covered with red hair that has never been combed; his beard has never been shaved and he goes barefooted until the first of December. He owns two hundred acres of land and his children go to school "when it rains." His wife plows a steer, and cuts all the stove-wood. He has an "Adams Apple on his neck that makes him look as if he had made an unsuccessful attempt to swallow his head.'? ' "He owns seven yellow bounds, raises , ridge rooter hogs" and runs a "block ade still.? He rules his home like a despot. His wife cooks on the fire-place and he makes the children eat out of the pots. He says that he has lived fifty-five years and that, he has never workj ed but one . day on the public roads in his life. . If we bad that fellow up here in Madison County in two months time lie would comb his hair, cut off his grizzly beard, buy his wife a cook-stove, go to raising 'good hogs and stop his children from eating out of the pots. r I Believe in v Good Roads. As for me, give me good roads give them to me. now for when we are all dead we won't need them. I believe in good roads today hot next year but right now. We all go into ecstacy when the preachers tell us -of the ' golden streets" that we're going to walk by and by." If God has pro vided golden streets for the an gels, I believe that man ought to provide, at least, a well graded" sand clay road here for himself d his posterity. the Shame Her Face. From "Honor and shame from no con dition rise, ; , Act well your part, there, all the honor lies." , These lines learned by us all in childhoods early days have stood the test of time and cling to our memory ' still. Many, a time, from them, we have taken courage to stand up for the right against the wrong.- The battle between stagnation and progress is on; the fight between death and decay and prosperity, and hapiness is being waged and you are invited to enlist on the one side or the other next Wednes day and Thursday at which time the battle will be fought to a fin ish with the pioner weapons of civilization.' Will you enlist .for the fight? On which, side will you fight? . Get on the side; of light and progress. With a homely mattock, , let's dig the shame from the face of ''Old Madison County" and write a cross her hills' Good Roads For eer and Ever." , The News Record, on behalf of itself and the good-roads peo ple of the county desire to thank the liberal and progressive peo ple of Marshall who have cpntri buted of their cash toward de fraying the expense incurred tin printing and mailing out to the citizens or the county who are not subscribers seven hundred extra copies of this issue. The liberal soul shall be made fat," and the fat producing diet wil come over the route of the Cen tral Highway and the intersect ing good r o a d s of Madison County. .A The Family Cough Medicine In every home there there should be a bottle of Dr. King's New Disoov ery, ready, for Immediate use when any member of the family contract a cold, or a cough.
