A person la not safe from mob
violence in Georgia epen though
he be within the prison walls.
Leo M. Frank was probably fatal
y cut with a large knife while
confined in the state prison, last
week. There seems to be gross
carelessness on the part of some
ewe to allow the Inmates of a pri
son to have such dangerous weapons.
With an increase in the valua
tion of our property this year and
a levy of $1.42 by the County
Commissioners it looks like It
will be a ctfse of trying to get the
connty to take" over the land and
pay them the difference for the
taxes.
By the time $1.42 on the $100
00 valuation and the additiona
special taxes for the various
things is paid we will be thank

of county officials and increased

Is an invasion of England still
contemplated? Some observers
in Holland believe so on the
strength of preparations made in
Belgium and on the German
coast. More stringent regula
tions have also been made pro
hibiting foreigners, even though
neutrals, from approaching the
sea. 'It is possible that the ,me
nace of invasion is counted upon
to keep a great 'British' army in
.England, but even if . this is the
dominant strategic motive,' of
courseeverythingwould.be kept
ready to seize the opportunity if
it should come. Much depends
on the balance of naval strength,
and it may be that the Germans
hope to whittle down the British
margin to a point jwhre DO sur
plus would be left to prevent an
invasion if a daring feint should
be made in another place by the
German battle fleet. It is sug
gested that not the least of the
motives for the ruthless war up
on Gshing boat3 is the desire to
clear the North sea of observers
who might rpport the movements
of German warships. Sjuph a dash
is not inconceivable, but the
chances are so greatly against its
success that it would probably be
attempted only as a last resort.
England seems to be less con
cerned ovr jfc than over the dan
ger that new forces released on
the eastern front may be thrown
into FJapders for a new drive at
Calais, but a. strong army for
home defense is thought neces'
sary.

Thaw Receives Freedom
ft A .....
Alter a, game tight lor more
than nine years for his freedom
Harry if. Thaw walked from the
Court room last Friday a free man
It has been a question of sanity
all the time.
It is possible that he should
have been convicted and punished
as any other criminal for his
crime, but since it became evident
that there would be no' punish
ment other than being in the
courts, it is better that he go free.
The only thing that has prevent
ed his freedom long ago is that
the" great State of New York had
more money than the prisoner but
it does not seem ' to have been
spent as judicially Thaw being
a better financier.. ' ; '

The sinking of the Lusitania
recalls an almost forgotten chap
ter in history. I n December,
1862, the Ariel, a large passen
ger steamer, owned by yander
bilt's grandfater, Commodore
Vanderbilt, was overhauled by
the Confederate cruiser Alabama
off the coast o f Cuba. Th e
Ariel bad on board 140 Federal
officers and men, a battalion of
marines on their way to the Pa
cine station, bhe also had on
board over 300 other passengers,
many of them women and child
ren. Of course, it was not pos
sible for the Alabama to take the
passengers of t h e Ariel, which
was a large and vaiueable ship,
and the property of an enemy of
the South, but it never occurred
to Confederate commander, Rap
hael Semmes. to sink the vessel
He sent one of bis officers to re- E
assure the women end children
who were expecting dreadful I i
things from the "pirate." N o t
an article belonging to any pas
senger was touched. The sol
diers were paroled, t h e s h i p
placed under bond (a bond tnat
Commandore . Vanderbilt never
made good) and t h e Alabama
steamed away to seek for strong-
foes. ' The South : was shut
in. with powerful foes, as Germa
ny is shut in, and the South was
crashed in defeat a s Germany
probably will be, but, defeated
or victorious, Germany can never
have the shining r e cor d
for chilvalry and consideration
for the weak, coupled with u n-
surpassed courge, that is the im
perishable hertiaje of the Sou
thern Confederacy.
