No one will deny the need of a dual purpose dairy breed In America one that Is primarily a dairy breed but that will also furnish desirable beef, The old system of beef production resting on free range, cheap lands and cheap feed is even now a thing of the past Meats of all kinds are, year by vear, advancing th price; and If the working people are to have beef at all within their means. It must come Produce of a Prize Winner. .Torn the dairy herds of the country. Except for beef for the few who are able to pay very high prices, cows can no longer be kept merely for the calves produced; practically everywhere the dairy cow must take the place of the beef cow. - Since these facts are In disputable, farmer-dairymen seeking to improve their herds for dairy pur poses should keep the item of meat production constantly in mind. How many cows there are in the United States thai are kept for milk production, except for such figures as are found In the census tables, Is un known; but it may be safely stated that the number exceeds 20.000.000, MARKETING THE PEACH CROP One successful Way Is In Car Lots and That Meana Co-operatively r 8ome Eaaentlal Hlnta. (By W. H. WICKER Arkansas Expert' m.nr niMLiuii.F For conditions whore the markets are comoaratlvely distant there is just one way to market peaches suc cessfully on a commercial scale, ana that a in car lota. This generally means co-operatively, as few growers have enough of any one variety to make up a car lot themselves.. Grow ers In the same community should olant the same variety in order that they may ripen at the same date. . It is almost impossible for a peach grow- to live bv himself. Therefore do not expect to go into a community, no mortar how well the soil and climate are adapted to the cultivation of peaches, and expect to make a success nt flva or ten acres of oeaches unless you have a good local market JDetter get a few neighbors to go In with you and plant a few acres and market r-n.nnrstJvelv. Form a co-ODeratlve association and, if possible, affiliate with a larger central market agency. As for neaches. the trade uses the bushel basket and the six-basket crate. Nearly all the markets prefer the buchel basket, and there It Is, In most cases, the more desirable package. v Proper picking, grading and pack ing are essential features in peach marketing. Fresh Water for Cows. fresh, clean w:.ter Is particularly Inf oortant during hot weather and a fresh ply should be given the cows at ,t taree times a day. - - sie seises - snail f p V I :i " ' ! j s d DUAL-PURPOSE COWS and that the average cow does not give a return of exceeding $40 per year for the labor Invested and food consumed. With Increasing land values and coat of labor and feed, such a return gives little or no profit; and it Is up to the farmer-dairyman keeping average cows to find out why he is working without compensation. : If the average dairy herd In the United States pro duces Just enough to Induce its owner to keep on working, It is evident that many cows are kept at a loss, and that if the average production could be raised a nice profit would result It Is also evident that the only way to raise the average Is to Improve the methods of caring for the cattle and also the cattle themselves. By Im proving the methods, It Is quite likely that the better three-fourths of the cows would produce as much profit as all now do, and the one-fourth now kept at a dead loss might be sont to the block without decreasing the out put of dairy products. The man who milks cows merely for the pleasure he geta out of It provided he can afford It, may confer a favor on humanity, but does not show good judgment and the sooner such men can be Induced to change their methods the better it will be for the whole dairy Industry. ' Improvement in conditions Is neces sarily slow. The greater part of the owners are lethargic; but there Is al ways a progressive portion that is looking for better things, and this portion will in time leaven the whole mass. The main cause of this lethargy Is Ignorance. Few men would keep unprofitable cows if they knew which were kept at a loss; but they do not test the cows Individually and so can not know.; All progress in dairy husbandry. aside from Improved methods of car ing for the cattle, must depend upon Improvement by selection and by breeding. By selection of the best cows, and breeding to the sons of best cows, in time a great Improvement would be shown; but this process Is too slow when there is a quicker way. That quicker way is to make use of the Improved dairy breeds for the ob taining of bulls with which to mate the selected cows. An Improved breed Is one that is able to convert food In to valuable products more' profitably than could the breed or breeds from which it was derived. - Also it must be so thoroughly established that It will breed true. The breed which should be carefully bred to Is the one that excels In the profitable production of milk, butter, cheese and veal, and also beef production. SEPARATOR IS QUITE USEFUL To Secure Last Cent of Profit Out of Dairy One Must Take Every Pre caution to Get Most Milk. " - ..... The modern dairy is very different from the dairy of the old time, and to get the last cent of profit out of your labor, and out of your cow, you must take every precaution for securing the largest quantity of milk and for get ting from that milk the largest quan tity of butter and cream. ; " One way la to get a separator and then to learn how to use the separator. Then you must-study the food prob lem ' Tou must keep an account with every cow. If you have three or five or ten; do not average the production of milk. Keep a separate acount with each cow fend find out whether each cow is producing enough, to justify you In feeding It and caring for It This Is the foundation of success In the dairy. j , PROPER ROOSTS FOR CHICKS Always Use Flat Plecea About Three Inches Wide Allow Plenty of : Room for Them to Grow. ; Do not give the growing chicks any opportunity to roost upon the cross studdlngs. If such are used in the construction of the house cover them with a slanting piece of wood which makes It almost impossible for them to perch on. , . j The roosts should also not be round.- as such roosts are apt to cause crook ed breast bones.
