There should be 50 or more going from Mad ison County. If you have a car oil it up, tighten the brakes, put the tires in good shape, and meet the rest at the Court House. Of course you will want to accomodate your own family first; the wife has earn ed a short outing, it will be an education for the children. Take them all. If you have not a load from your own fami ly, invite your neighbor. Don't drive an empty car. Above all don't forget to put the lunch in. CHICKENS The outlook for chickens is encouraging. Mr. Oliver, the State Extension A- gent, who was in the county last week, and the county agent visited about 38 farmers in the four days he was here. These are farmers who are interested in poultry, who are planning on having at least 100 Cracking Good Hens on their farms next Porter Bryan, according to Mr. Oliver, has the best brood er house he has seen in the state. Best is used in the sense that it is built at the least mon ey cost, is properly planned, and is sanitary. It is made of logs chinked and whitewashed The money spent in building this house was very little and yet the house is equal to any other house. There are other brooder houses in the county but they are built of more ex pensive material and do not answer the purpose any better. Louis Ponder has a bunch of young fryers that will weigh right at 1 1-2 pounds each at a bout 6 weeks of age. Ask him how he did it. Clabbered milk helped. He has a flock of White Leghorn hens that are a -redit to any flock. Don Fisher, Porter Bryan, Jeter Bryan, J. E. Carter, J. B. Tweed, W. V. Farmer, Al Bry an and Dr. Hutchins all have some fine specimens of hte Bar red Rock chickens Their chickens are of the bred-to-lay strain and will make a founda tion from which to build this variety in the county. Mrs. J. E. Bryan - is growing a fine bunch of youngsters all hatch flock. We Almost I forgot the Barred Rock chicks of Edwin Jarvis on California Creek. We say the men have these flocks. We believe that that is not right; no doubt but that the ladies deserve a big share of the credit. However the men surely do not neglect the poutry yard on these farms. Mrs. Crawford Bryan is hav ing grand hatches in her incu bator and has a nice lot of Brown Leghorns growing. O ver on Big Laurel, Mrs. Roose velt Franklin showed us some fine Barred Rocks and reports a 90 hatch from her incubator. The White Leghorns must not be omitted. 2500 of these chickens have been shipped in this spring. Chape Tweed, White Rock, has a profitable flock of hens of this variety and is raising a nice lot of chickens also. Tom Woody, Rout 4, also has a grand lot of White Leghorns and will soon have a bunch of young biddies grow ing to make up his laying pull ets for next winter. Floyd Cassada is getting started with m t S 1 tin ! a good sized hock oi wnue Leghorn chicks. Edgar Jarvis is getting along nicely with his 300 White Leghorn chicks and SUCCESS or FAILURE I Which do YOU want ? Bank and save a PART of your income REGULARLY. Out on the Will White farm, Route 3, another flock of White Leghorns is started in a new building; ,up at Mars Hill Frank Gibbs is growing out some White Leghorn chicks to fill his new henhouse and farther out, on Middle Fork, O. R. Young is having good suc cess with a flock of White Leg horn chicks. Mrs. Rob Tweed, on Hayes Run, is also finding that poultry pays and is pre paring for the next winter by growing a supply 01 wmte Leghorn chicks. Mr. Oliver encouraged the people very much. He is much interested in the use of home grown feeds, mixing the rations and only buying to supplement the feeds that can be had at home. We could not get to everyone on this trip but h is planning on returning in Au gust and will probably be here to judge the poultry at the an nual poultry show in the Fall. FIVE CRACKING GOOD COWS -It begins to look as tho the people of Madison County meant business. Mon day 20 different people patron ized the cream station. They came from Mars Hill, from out on White Rock, and from all sides of Marshall. When all was cleaned up and ready to go home 12 cans of cream had been collected and billed to Biltmore, 120 gallons. Ac cording to our test this contain ed 325 pounds of fat. This is a 100 pounds more fat than ever before and 5 more patrons. When we ar. ship ping 500 lb s. of fat every weak it will mean something to the county. It should grow to& twice that amount or more. The price of fat is falling a little, the natural trend at this time of year, but our price is re maining well toward 50c a lb.
