C, under act of March 3, 1879. ber 1st, 1930 to December let, 1930. SCHOOL FUND Receipts Balance Nov. 1st, 1930 Bank of French Broad, Interest - B. E. Guthrie. Fines REDUCING THE NUMBER OF COUNTIES Elsewhere in this paper may be found an ar ticle taken from The Progressive Farmer head ed, "Consolidating Counties To Lower Taxes." The Progressive Farmer is a paper of wide cir culation and general information, and the fact that this paper has endorsed the idea of consol idating counties is good evidence that the idea is both feasible and desirable.. We are aware of some of the objections to the idea, and we do not look for this reformation to be brought about in one year, but we believe that such a proposition should have the attention of our incoming legis lature. It will be seen that the list of suggested j consolidations does not include Madison Coim ty. We commend the article from The Pro gressive Farmer as worthy of consideration. Summeral, Repairs Ned Anderson, Chairs at Mars Hill Repays THE TROUBLE IN ASHEVILLE The financial condition of our neighbor city Asheville, and County, Buncombe, is deplora ble, due to the failure of the banks in which so much of the funds of the city and county have been squandered. The resignation of the city officials is being demanded. Mayor Gallatin Roberts and Commissioner Bartlett refuse to re sign, while the other commissioner, has already resigned. The schools may be compelled to close for want of funds and there seems to be no way of getting outside help until some changes are made. We sympathize with our neighbors in their distress and trust they can reach a satis- J factory s6lution of their difficult problems. The unnatural boom that Asheville was on five or six years ago was the worst enemy Asheville ever had. Real estate values inflated beyond all rea son by high-powered salesmen has been the un derlying cause of all this distress. We can see how little by little over this period of years while these unnaturally inflated values have been shrinking back to normalcy, city, county and bank officials have been caught in this trap, and we doubt that any of them are morally respon sible for as much of this trouble as will be placed upon them. Not only the officials and those higher up in finances, but many of the people of moderate means, such as school teachers, pro fessional men and women, newspaper publish ers, merchants, and even preachers, were en gaged in gambling in real estate lured on by the rapid making of wealth by a few. No one knew for a certainty that values would drop to the level they have reached. Securities that were ample five years ago are practically worth less today. In a time like this, it is natural for people who have lost to be embittered and to try to place the blame on somebody. Yet those who are now throwing stones would doubtless have done the same thing the others did if they had been in their position. "All's well that ends well" was one of the wise sayings of Shake speare, and if the boom on five years ago had re sulted well, the officials now being kicked would have been lauded to the skies for the very things they did. If they intentionally did anything crooked, if they purposely caused the city or county to lose, they deserve .all the condemna tion possible, but if to the best of their judgment they were doing what they believed to be for the best interest of t h e organization which they were serving, the people should show more con sideration when they failed to foresee the "crash". Many individuals made the same mis take. They bought high priced lots and built on them high priced buildings, and in many in stances lost both as values decreased, and while they would like to blame somebody for their rtoubles, they are compelled to suffer the conse quences.. Since the above was in type we see that Commissioner Bartlett has also resigned. Ivy Service Station, Labor, Greas Mrs. Bergie Meadows, Teacher . Mr. P. V.
