We read : "With farmers in the North Central States praying for rain, not only for the relief of their bstered crops and starving livestock but for personal re lief from the desert-like sun that' continued to bake many states, Weather Bureau offi cials reported the drought area had spread to three-fourths of the country and was the most extensive dry period in history. As the heat , soared and the blistered crops burned the Ag ricultural Adjustment Admini stration continued to add coun ties in many states to the "e mergency drought are a," bringing the total to more than 135. Secretary Wallace made a personal tour of the afflicted states. President Roosevelt or dered prompt steps toward effective relief for drought suf ferers! while administration leaders estimated between $200,000,000 and $500,000,000 will be needed in the drought relief program. "Previously reported a the worst drought in 50 years, it is all the more serious because normal rainfall in the affected area has been grossly insuffi cient since last October. In May and early June rainfall from the Rockies to the Great Lakes, embracing nearly a mil lion square miles, was less than 20 per cent of normal. Added to this has been an ever in creasing heat-wave, with a blis tering sun and temperatures sometimes as high as 105 de grees Fahrenheit. As if that wasn't enough to plague any mortal, grasshoppers have hatched in the dusty soil by the j billions and chinch bugs and Uliici iiioctuj nave auucu tu -"c havoc. Pasture Grasses have been parched so livestock re fused to eat it. Forest fires urViinti wpnt t.Vi tindfr-drv woods in several states added to the menace." After readinor the. above, the refreshing showers we are hav ing in Madison County should make us rejoice. HELPING THE NEEDY BY TAXATION If people who are able would voluntarily contribute to help the less fortunate, we would not favor resorting to the national treasury for relief. cut witn numan nature as u compulsion must be brought on the strong to support the weak. Every community has its Shy lock the man or woman who appears to think it duty to pile up wealth by taking ad vantage of the necessities of his fellow men. Such mtaerably stingy, selfish misers avoid contributions and if caught un awares, make the solicitor wish he hadn't been born because a nickel w a s extracted. Taxa tion should compel such misers to shell out." But does it? Not under the law of tax-free gov ernment securities. They can squeeze the life out of their fellows and pile up the cash Marshall, N.
