'v P Marshall. N. C, Nov. 1, 1934 TIE NKWS RECORD THIRD PAGE MR. FREEMAN ASKS MR. HERSCHEL l HE (MR. HERSCHEL) IS GOING TO AGAIN FURNISH FREE SCHOOL BOOKS, LIKE HE PROMISED IN 1932? (Brought from Second Page) i . . ' ' y - - . - letting the Big Boys thdt are drawing lots of money, under your Legislation, WALK UP AND TAKE THEM FOR TAXES. If vou didn't like the law under which Madison County would have fallen, HAD YOU THE -GUTS TO EXEMPT YOUR COUNTY? Why didn't you pais a reasonable foreclosure law e nffhnn Prtimw? That. wnnlH not. have taken the farms a- jui mauiouii vvvj - - , way from the delinquent taxpayers xr force them to pay off tne sheriff and tax collectors in iees ana interest. tw tTafaVibl in vnnr rotten pftmnfliVn in cet back into the Legislature again, FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T REFER TO THE McDEVlTT'S LAWSSAGAIN, as you were the last member of the Legislature and you put your stamp of approval on the laws even after you pledged repeal. After you and I are dead and gone the future Historians win record you as a ivicej viu HENCHMAN OR THEY WILL HAVE TO BRAND YOU AS FEEBLE-MINDED! 1 . There is that same rot again about the Auditor, ask ing me about him. HE IS YOUR AUDITOR! You told tne taxpayers in Madison County that you would abolish the laws under which he was elected and whack him down as though he were a serpent and in the face of all that you went down and endorsed him and here you are BELLY-ACHING ABOUT HIM AGAIN " YOUR BROKEN PROMISES ARE AS NUMERABLE LIKE THE SANDS OF THE SEASHORE. . ! There it is again about the amy elected ttepreBcuto- tive. I pronounce you a fine representative when it comes w LEGISLATING THE SHERIFF $607.65 MONTHLY AND ALL FEES AND STRIKING down the delinquent taxpayers in order that his fees may be numbered by the hundreds and thousands Why is it, Mr. Herschel, that you want to represent Madison County and want every citizen of the County to stay a- way from Raleigh, except your henchmen, while YOU AKL ujn THE NEST? EXPLAIN. v If I am elected you come on down and bring all the people. I will be glad to see them and I will feed them as long as the money lasts that I draw and when it is gone I want them to say : "COME AND EAT". Mr. Herschel, read your book a gain. That law that you were blowing about, the Sheriff, in 1931 was passed and repealed and another Bill passed at the same Session fixing the Sheriff's salary at $150.00 per month, less all the fee that ne collected, deducted from the salary. Brother, that was a Democratic measure and it was a Democratic sheriff and under it the Sheriff GOT NO FEES AND UNDER YOUR LAW HE GETS ALL THE FEES, ALL THE SALARY, ALL THE EXPENSE ROTTEN, ROTTEN LEGIS LATION YOU PASSED. " You are mistaken. I never questioned the intelli gence of the people of Madison County. It was your tyrranical and oppressive Legislation and your broken promises that I was alluding to, and your bringing the taxpayers quickly to final de struction, then DENYING every bit of it. What are you talking about $500.00? Don't you know the Sinking Fund Commission alone saved those old tax paying boys THAT YOU OPPRESSED, the sum of approxi mately fifty-one thousand dollars this year over and above the LITTLE DAB THEY DREW? In 1932 you said you would abolish all the Boards. Evit dently you did not have time; as your time was all taken up in fattening your officers with lots of money and destroying the taxpayers. Really you went to the Legislature in 1933, simply because you were a Republican on your flowery promises to re lieve taxpayers and reduce the expense and the fact is you rais- ed expense and all you did was to pass Legislation to: FATTEN THE OFFICERS. Now you are very sympathetic. You want these FARMERS TO VOTE FOR YOU AGAIN that's about ALL YOU ARE INTERESTED IN. Mr. Herschel, I know what you think. You know that you Legislated for the Big Boys and you expect them to wave the flag and tell the fellows to vote for you because he raised my salary and tried to give Jeter $2400.00, but I believe they have found you out. Mr. Herschel, today I picked up a News-Record pub lished in 1930, which carried your announcement to run for Representative the time DR. HUTCHINS DEFEATED YOU. I .quote your pet expression: "It's my conviction that any man who would betray their trust to the end that he would be mstru-fl mental in enacting such Legislation as would enhance the per-fj sonal gain of himself AND A FEW OF HIS FxlIZNDS IS A TRAITOR TO HIS COUNTY IN THE VILEST FORM". Her schel, th'nk once more of the $607.65 your friend, Sheriff Guy, has been drawing monthly ; also the attempt to give Jeter $2400.00 annually. Now I ask the voters to go back and look the News-Record over and see how many farms are advertised for sale, under your tax foreclosure law. What do you call that, Mr. Herschel? ARE YOU YET USING THAT WORD TRAITOR? Here is what for you to do: Get out a circular with a BALD EAGLE'S PICTURE and AN ELEPHANT'S and deny all your promises and all your Legislation, and tell the boys it is ALL DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGN LIES, and for the voters to vote the Republican ticket even if they were traitored in 1933. Why don't you appeal to the VOTERS AND' THE LORD TO FORGIVE YOU, get out of the race, and LEAD A DIFFERENT LIFE? Yours very truly, FRED FREEMAN if YD3 7 To Restore Old Time Liberties To The Farmer And Tax Payer Arid jfIecbes His Best Efforts In Passing Legislation Adyaifc i I will not be able to legislate free school books, "I am afraid,' LIKE MR. HERSCHEL PROMISE;D:itfi63 gefit.' I will 3nb' introduce favor or vote for ANY TRAITOR LEGISLATION to TAKE BY FORCE, FARMS FOR TAXES AS LONG AS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS FEEDING AND CLOTHING MILLIONS OF TAX PAY ERS. IN ADDITION I PLEDGE YOU THAT I WILL REPEAL THE HERSCHEL-SHERIFF GUY LEGISLATION, WHEREBY THE SHER IFF HAS BEEN RECEIVING $607.65 MONTHLY for expenses, salary and mileage and all the fees, in the land sales and all other fees. I want to see the farmers restored to their OLD TIME LIBERTIES IN.MADISON COUN TY so that our homes can be better protected by THE FARMERSGUN AND HIS FAITHFUL DOG,WTHOUTTAX. We need more pro r'on against TRAITORS A N D KIDNAP PERS. . :. ' ' ' If you send me to Raleigh with Authority - 'All - - f A vi .! 4 si .if- ; s FRED FREEMAN Democrat Representative to represent you, I will be back home most every Sunday to discuss our problems with the voters and taxpayers and I will be glad to see every body and hear your suggestions regardless of po litical affiliations or whether you voted for me or not. I WILL DO THE VERY BEST I CAN FOR YOU. ONE MORE THING AND I LEAVE MY CASE IN YOUR HANDS IF I AM ELECTED I AM NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING THAT YOU OR I WILL BE ASHAMED OF AND HAVE TO DENY AFTER THE LEGISLA TURE ADJOURNS. Therefore, I will insist on all the folks in Madison County coming. to Ra leigh to see me just as often as you can. I will be pleased to have any delegation come if they fa vor my legislation or if they oppose it. In anything I have said it's not my ifoten--on fo offend anyone personally or politically. I have just ileal t with facts and figures as they ap peared on the records. Yours truly, FRED FREEMAN FUG, 5) A Y-ji ' 3 t J' "riEPAGE IS BOUGHT BY F. E.
