Memory : Selection: ' "Bepetif, ; and be baptized every one of you in. the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness, "of your sins; and ' you shall receive 4he gift of the Holy Spirit:' . (Acts :98.) , Lesson Text; Acts S. This lesson should help realize that the comang of the Holy Spirit into the lives of those who look by faith to Christ, by what ever means it may come, is al ways a transforming experience. Studying our Bible for today, we read of Pentecost, and the touching of the Apostles with the Holy Spirit. And we read of Peter's moving exhortation to has brethren: "Repent, and be bapti zed every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgive ness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the , Holy Spir it." (Acts 2:38.) The early Christian went out from Pentecost with the convic tion unshaken that their leader Jesus was alive and able to give them strength to carry on in faith. They went out with a God -em powered life to be his witnesses throughout the world. They be lieved the gifts of the spirit of God in their hearts demanded of them a life of witnessing to that Spirit. The results of Pentecost are seen in the birthday of the Christian; Church and in Peter's explana tion to the people of the founda tion of the Christian faith on the character and life of Jesus. This: was the gift of the Holy Spirit, and this was the power in . which the persons of Christian , faith went out to change a world. ' . A different life awaited them, It was true they had no' great wealth in the - material things.-! They had no great political power. They 1 were ' less of : military power than ever before in their history, They had no thought chat they would seek to conquer an empire. But they were trans formed from a group of disheart ened, discouraged . disciples into flaming evangels for a risen Lord. For them, life now had' hope. The future was bright because it was a future with Christ in the King dom. In this troubled world of oursi today, we need to let the Holy Spirit enter into us. We live in a day and age which is largely concerned with larger powers. In every area of life and experience, man is seeking to get greater power than hag been known here tofore. 'Life and -energy are spent across the years seeking to get economic security. V .tions t eontrtwntly' throwin; t'vlr fewll weight around whenever an i arises which they feel calls t reminding a ' potential enemy of, the vatrtness of their1 might. . For eign policy' too often is conducted on the brink of open war, . Scientifically, we have ' made reat atrldea., W have .made them In past generation; we are currently making them in, our own generations; and what vast scopes lie before our children im years to comeT We can only dim ly guess at the prospects. God provided us with great powers in this universe he .gave us. We have learned to harness water and electricity and bring via them un told benefits to mankind. The scientific advances that now en able us to send rockets into outer apace and past the moon sober us. They make us realize that God has endowed man with a cap acity for knowledge so great that he is able to defy the gravity pull of his own planet! But what we tend to forget is that the uni verse, with all its wonders, magni- tficently illustrates the marvel of disciplined power. The benefits we have "discovered" will only be benefits so long as they are nob' used Carelessly and without due regard for human saftey. But an even greater power i8i available to us. It i the power of God's Holy Spirit. God is will ing to fill the life of any and all men with power. Indeed, he longs for this to happen. The power with which he wanit3 to invest man's life would, of course, have to be like his own; holy, disciplin ed, uniboastinig, refined. So many of us have a warped idea about the meaning of holi ness. We too ottten associate it with pious canting, and far this reason we do not wish to have the term applied to us. Yet God can give nothing less than true holiness. Human personality is. Therefore God makes available to man his. own Holy Spirit. It is the most appropriate gift he can offer, and also the most precious. One whose sins are forgiven may become proud and arrogant unless he welcomes the influence of the "Holy Spirit in his heart to constantly remind him that the wonder, of his redemption wasi wrought by God. From that hour on hi life must be lived in grati tude,' 'He must express toward others a lively concern that they, too, may enjoy a life that is clean sed from sin, and which is praise worthy for : its devotion to God, who' dwells within. j o ' 6 ' Security LUCILLE M. HICKMAN . Field Representative Madison County V 0 "Disabled children may be eli gible for social security payments' if a parent has qualified for ben efits," Mrs. Lucill M. Rickman, field representative, has stated, Regardless of the child's age, he or she may become entitled, but the child must have been disabled before reaching age 18. i The disability must be estab lished with medical evidence, that is, statements of doctors or hos pitals where the child has been treated. There are some cases in which the doctor who treated the child before age 18 is now de ceased. In these cases, the dis bility may be established by school records, or statements from friends or neighbors who know how long the disability has exist ed. It is also necessary to pre sent medical evidence showing the nature and extent of the disabili ty at the time claim is filed. When a disabled child qualifies for payments the child's mother may also be eligible to receive and the mother performs services benefits if the child is in her care, for the child over and above the usual services to other members of the family. "The disability may be either a physical or mental condition which prevents the child from working," Mrs. Rickman said. Of course a child is not eligible un less a parent is entitled to social security benefits, or had enough work to his credit to be insured at the time of his death.
