Lesson Text: Psalm 91; HI. , Today, In the lesson before us, we are concerned with this ques tion: How does God enattfe us to meet fear, danger, and afflic tion? The Psalm we have studied to day was a Psal mof the pilgrims, completing the perilous journey of the Passover, to and from Je rusalem. Many dangers luked on the way; narrow, stony roads, Where falls and broken bones were a daily danger; the demon? of the moon and of the sun, which t i i ).' 1 t:.e f sent Use'.; tiie '. We Americans, both by heritage and custom be lieve in it The idea is affirmed time and time again in presided' tial proclamations : any! " by other official documents. We wish to be known as a people wW trust in God. . We are the political de scendants ' of ,' the , persons who wrote the Mayflower Compace, the Declaration of Independence, and th Constitution of the Unit ed States. These are the oft-a vowed fruits of trust in God. We are the spiritual descendants of t!hose who wrote the Bible, which is the most eioquenjt witness for trust in God. And as we take the measure ' of our inner resources in these brittle, frantic times,, we know how great is our need for this faith of our fathers. i OBut trust in God, like every other spiritual treasure of our hertiage, will soon become mean, ingless if it is not experienced a- mew by each successive genera tion. We may inherit its tradi tions, vocabulary, and institu tions. We may even sense our present need for it. But we must .'e ChrLi'-ois at." t i li heat reveUed ly la i "' all persons, Jesus Christ. V o . that he is at least as superior ' we believe that in his words we was the historic Jesus. Therefore hear God speak, that in lis deed of compassion ' we see what God does,' that in his death we know the measure of God's love for us, and that in his Resurrection we are assured Of God's tniumph over sin .and death. For tbis reason we affirm that there is a God who1 cares. t We believe that be yond ; matter i: mind, ; beyond multiplicity is purpose, : beyond power ..is - a; personal :,i Being, be yond the prison of cause and ef fect ii redemptive love; . We be lieve with good reason , that the fundamental troth about th na ture of filings is this: There Is a God whose face we seen in Jesus Christ a God who cares. Stand ing on this foundation, we trust, And, one of the benef its of this trust in God is that it motivates us to do our best in the midst of the worst. .'
