Towns
Allocation of $7,358,135.97
Powell Bill funds to 415 participa-
, ting municipalities was 'announced
Monday by the State Highway
' Department. The funds are dis
tributed annually to , qualified
cities and towns for use in non-
highway system street work with
in their corporate limits. . Checks
to the individual municipalities,
will be mailed from : Raleigh the
latter part of this month in or
der that they will ' reach munioi-
oalities bv October 1
' . The total allocation this year
represents an increase over I960'
of $337,234.25, but in case tCf ."ap
proximately 60 of the partici
, pa tine municipalities, this year's
allocation will be 'less thorn the
1960 Allocation.
This ds brought about by the
fact that a new municipality pop
ulation base is being used for the
first time. The PoweflMBill statute
calls for the use of the latest cer
tified federal ; decennial census
figures. The I960 census figures
were certified during "last .winter
and were used m figuring this
year's allocation, Previously, from
the beginning of the Powell IBM
fin 19R1 throuKn last year. .. the
1950 census figures were used
The 10-yesr population growlfe
of participating municipalities lhas
averaged 26.3. Where a mumci
pality's growth has mot equaled
25.3, the population factor may
i verv 'well cause a decrease m row
ell BIM allocation. Some of the
lareer municipalities have expe-
' rienced population increases great
er than 25.8 and, consequently,
received more money this year
Y The 'Highway 'Department- last
year notified municipal officials
that they might experience de-
creases and special explanatory
material is being mailed this year

1796 FARMERS
CAST VOTES IN
SC ELECTION
-Farmers of Madison County
showed a much greater interest
in the election of their community
ASC representatives for the com-
insr year than usual. In comment
ing on the turn-out in Monday's
community election, ASCS office
manager, Ralph W. Ramsey, said
that a total of 1796 farmers vis
ited the election polls as com
oared to only 848 last year. This
year's record is some 400 better
that the 1406 record established
in 1958 which was the best record
for the previous 6-year period.
Ramsey said that this year's rec-
nM vote could be contributed to
an increased interest of farmers
in the farm programs administer
ed by ASCS and the support giv
en by businessmen, county agra.
cultural workers, the local radio
station and the press. It also in
dicated that cur farmers and cit
izens would like to see the ASCS
farm nroerams continued and
strengthened.
In conclusion. Ramsey said that
an behalf of the county ASC com
mittee and all those associated
with ASCS, he woufbd like to thank
all those who helped in getting
out a big vote in Monday's ASC
committee election.
