Picking up the scraps from last
week's Heard and Seen column
I didn't get quite finished be
fore (dosing out U)(2 entirely, 1
want to say that I thought Santa
Claus did a fine job in "covering"
Marshall although he had his
headquarters in the new Garren
Auto Supply, he also was seen
on the sidewalks much to the
delight of both young and old
he also gave the children at the
Marshall school quite a thrill by
visiting over there and handing
out candy speaking of the
school, I want to thank the fac
ulty and students for the nice bill
fold presented me after I played
the piano at chapel recently I
also wish to thank Principal Ed
wards for his kind remarks I
actually don't deserve such "flat
tery" I enjoy doing what I can
for the students and faculty and
wouldn't know what to do at a
ball game if I wasn't behind the
mike andor taking notes of the
game for publication anyway,
you-all, I appreciate the billfold
- now to find something to go
into it - that's the problem al
so wish to thank Mr. Bowman for
his "delicious" gift like I said
about the school, Dcdrick, I en
joy playing the organ and will
continue to help out, with organ
music at funerals whenever I can
before speaking of the New
Year, I also want to thank ev
eryone who sent Christmas Cards
I just feel awfully embarras
sed 'cause I didn't mail but a pre
cious few this year hope to do
better next year Tuesday New
Year's Day often referred to
as Howl Day, was most pleasant,
got up about 10 a. m., messed
around the house for a few min
utes came to town and looked
over the mail returned home
watched the Rose Parade and
then yup, you guessed it I
did what just about everybody
else did watched the games
that is, part of every game
Roy Reeves, a mighty fine guy in
my books, came up home and we
thoroughly enjoyed the Orange,
parts of tre Sugar and Cotton,
and all oft,' the Rose Bowl gilmes
"Hill" even cooked us up some
supper and served us in the liv
ing room so we wouldn't miss a
single play although I'm hav
ing a great deal of trouble with
my eyes, they stood up well un
der the pressure of the howl
games - instead of saying "stood
up well," maybe I should soy they
stayed open well Pender Mc
Klroy came in the office the other
day was glad to see him
Pander looks great I think
California agrees with him
Robert, Lewis, my secretary's hus
band, has also been in and out of
the office (naturally) since his
marriage to Locella he left for
Fort Gordon, Ga., Wednesday and
Locella was mighty melancholy
with postage rates increasing
next Monday I will have to "cut
down" on my correspondence
some Social Security also has
increased newsprint increased
everything going up, up, up,
and one subscriber writes in want
ing to know why The News-Record
costs "so much" I chal
lenge this subscriber to show rac
anything which doesn't cost mow
now than it did ten years ago
or even five years ago or even
one year ago he renewed his
subscription but said he thought
it should still be the same cost as
ten years ago some people
don't realize how much expense is
involved in producing a newspaper
the subscription price actually
doesn't do much more than pay
for the news-print it is printed on
didn't mean to "preach" a ser
mon in this column but it's all
part of Heard and Seen, Isn't it?
one of my readers writes in
wanting to know if IVe had any
more possum experiences
answer: thank goodness, no
for the reader inquiring about
"Scoop" (our pet Persian cat)
he's getting along fine is nine
years old and is the oss" at our
house, believe me the doctor
tells me I have double cataracts
and must undergo surgery this
Spring it's getting awfully
hard for me to distinguish people
even on the sidewalk as I pass
them please don't think I've
gone "high-hat" if I pass without
speaking actually, it's mighty
hard for me to read, write, drive,
or do anything with these cata
racts pestering me one of my
friends said I passed him twice
without speaking and wanted to
know if I was "mad" I told
him to please excuse me, I could
