PENLAND, Own Picking up the scraps from last week's Heard and Seen column I didn't get quite finished be fore (dosing out U)(2 entirely, 1 want to say that I thought Santa Claus did a fine job in "covering" Marshall although he had his headquarters in the new Garren Auto Supply, he also was seen on the sidewalks much to the delight of both young and old he also gave the children at the Marshall school quite a thrill by visiting over there and handing out candy speaking of the school, I want to thank the fac ulty and students for the nice bill fold presented me after I played the piano at chapel recently I also wish to thank Principal Ed wards for his kind remarks I actually don't deserve such "flat tery" I enjoy doing what I can for the students and faculty and wouldn't know what to do at a ball game if I wasn't behind the mike andor taking notes of the game for publication anyway, you-all, I appreciate the billfold - now to find something to go into it - that's the problem al so wish to thank Mr. Bowman for his "delicious" gift like I said about the school, Dcdrick, I en joy playing the organ and will continue to help out, with organ music at funerals whenever I can before speaking of the New Year, I also want to thank ev eryone who sent Christmas Cards I just feel awfully embarras sed 'cause I didn't mail but a pre cious few this year hope to do better next year Tuesday New Year's Day often referred to as Howl Day, was most pleasant, got up about 10 a. m., messed around the house for a few min utes came to town and looked over the mail returned home watched the Rose Parade and then yup, you guessed it I did what just about everybody else did watched the games that is, part of every game Roy Reeves, a mighty fine guy in my books, came up home and we thoroughly enjoyed the Orange, parts of tre Sugar and Cotton, and all oft,' the Rose Bowl gilmes "Hill" even cooked us up some supper and served us in the liv ing room so we wouldn't miss a single play although I'm hav ing a great deal of trouble with my eyes, they stood up well un der the pressure of the howl games - instead of saying "stood up well," maybe I should soy they stayed open well Pender Mc Klroy came in the office the other day was glad to see him Pander looks great I think California agrees with him Robert, Lewis, my secretary's hus band, has also been in and out of the office (naturally) since his marriage to Locella he left for Fort Gordon, Ga., Wednesday and Locella was mighty melancholy with postage rates increasing next Monday I will have to "cut down" on my correspondence some Social Security also has increased newsprint increased everything going up, up, up, and one subscriber writes in want ing to know why The News-Record costs "so much" I chal lenge this subscriber to show rac anything which doesn't cost mow now than it did ten years ago or even five years ago or even one year ago he renewed his subscription but said he thought it should still be the same cost as ten years ago some people don't realize how much expense is involved in producing a newspaper the subscription price actually doesn't do much more than pay for the news-print it is printed on didn't mean to "preach" a ser mon in this column but it's all part of Heard and Seen, Isn't it? one of my readers writes in wanting to know if IVe had any more possum experiences answer: thank goodness, no for the reader inquiring about "Scoop" (our pet Persian cat) he's getting along fine is nine years old and is the oss" at our house, believe me the doctor tells me I have double cataracts and must undergo surgery this Spring it's getting awfully hard for me to distinguish people even on the sidewalk as I pass them please don't think I've gone "high-hat" if I pass without speaking actually, it's mighty hard for me to read, write, drive, or do anything with these cata racts pestering me one of my friends said I passed him twice without speaking and wanted to know if I was "mad" I told him to please excuse me, I could n't half see same goal for all Mrs. Stinea Honored With A Surprise Birthday Dinner SWEAT SETS OTP BLAST Long Beach, Cattf.
