An American is subject to American laws, American income tax, anil American responsibilities. He can originate anywhere, from Kansas to China, and can he of any race or religion. Every American is different from every other A nierican, hut all have one thing in common, their Americanism. What does it mean to have American ism and why, with all its duties, is it so eagerly sought after? To be an American means to have a heritage, not just an ordinary one, but a glowing and lasting heritage, one? rich with great stroies and friendly customs. Washington, Lincoln, Lee, and other heroic men were all Ameri cans, and holidays such as Thanks giving and the Fourth of July be long only to Americans, and are woven into the heritage of this land. American culture is part of its heritage. Music, songs f the old South, of biy cities, and other phases of American life are part of this culture, as well as art and literature. Truly, Ameri ca has a heritage to be proud of. Americanism is a way of life, with friendly fun, day to day duties, interests such as sports or politics, and laughter of contented Americans who know that they live belter than anyone else on car-lb. An American can live as he pleases, be rich or poor, Christian or atheist, Demo crat or Republican, and other choices, large avid small, all im portant because they are there, choices to make. Being an American means that there is a responsibility to uphold, a responsibility to America and the world. An American has a hitage, a responsibility, justice, equality, and liberty.
