THE CHRISTIAN'S
CONFESSION
Memory Selection: "If any man
would com after ate, let aim de
ny himself and take up his crass
and (Miow me." (Mark 8:34)
Lesson Text: Mark 8:27 through
9:1.
In this lesson we consider Pe
ter's confession and examine our
own beliefs about Christ
This passage is the shortest in
our study of Mark. But it is ex
tremely important. The confes
sion of Peter and of the disciples
that Jesus waa the Christ brought
his previous ministry to a climax
and constituted the point of tran
sition into the final events of his
death and Resurrection.
This account of Peter's confes
sion is the pivotal point in Mark's
Gospel. All that has happened be
fore culminates in this experi
ence. Jesus is the Messiah, and
bow the ehaotylat oan affirm this
faith. But notice that Jams wait
ed a long time to oak thorn: "Who
do you say that I amT" It was
only after a sharing of Ufa af
ter the disciples have (wen with
Jesus, listened to him teach,
watched him work among the peo
ple, and been in his company
that Jesus asked thla question.
And it waa only as a result of his
total impact upon the people that
they were able to answer.
It is always this way in the
Christian life. The first require
ment is not that individuals be
able to quote creeds or say the
correct words. The first invitation
is that of a Person to persons. It
is an invitation to share life, to
live in community with Jesus.
When this has taken place, then
one can answer the question of
who Jesus is. There are no heaven-shattering
signs only a Per
son. No tremor of the earth
only a Life among men. But in
meeting this Person and in sharing
this Life one comes to know who
he is. He is the Christ.
This confession is the turning
point in the Gospel account. Je
sus has set his face toward Jeru
salem. He begins to indicate that
suffering is a part of his messian
ic role. The final events of hit
life are coming fast upon him
but in obedience he embraces his
task.
Upon the basis of their confes
sion, Jesus leads the disciples a
step further. Immediately after
Peter speaks, Jesus invites them
to share with him in his suffer
ing. And what did Jesus mean

If you are going through the
chance, don't' iloanaii. n.
countless thousands of women
by "taking a cross?"
To "cany a cross" means obedi
ence. Jesus' preseverence was due
to bis loyalty to the will of God.
We, tern, an to be obedient
en in the face of a cross, and
through a cross.
To "carry a cross" means hu
mility to set oneself at the dis
posal of God and to walk in his
way. To want what God wants
and to want it God's way is the
humility that is Implied in cross-bearing.
To "carry a crooss" ist o express
love and concern for others. There
is redemption in the cross-bearing
of Jesus. To "carry a cross"
means to carry with us what we
find at Jesus' cross; willingness
to be a servant, obedience, humil
ity, and concern for others. No
wonder so few followed Jesus!
And even the disciples were not
fully equal to the challenge until
later.
Simon Peter had spoken for the
disciple group and said Jesus was
the Christ. But they had yet to
learn that messiahship didnt mean
prestige. They had yet to under
stand that Jesus was a "suffer
ing servant." But the disciples
still followed. Uncertain about
future events, they were growing
in trust in their Lord. Not yet
free of self-ambition, they loved
this One rrtore than themselves.
And as a result, they were willing
to go even to Jerusalem and
to dare the threat of the authorities.
This call is still being issued.
Jesus invites us into his company
He invites his present-day disci
ples to share all of his life. He
invites those who follow to "car
ry a cross." He asks that they
grow in his likeness and become
fellow servants with him. Jesus
does not simply set an example.
He asks that we share a life. He
does not simply express an ideal
way of life, he presents himself
and invites us to come to him and
then go with him.

6God shows his love for us in that
while we were yet sinners Christ
died for us. (Romans 5:8 RSV)
The minister's wife was discuss
ing sin with some juniors. She
explained that God could not be
holy and overlook sin. Neither
could he tolerate it. To be cer
tain they understood, she repeat
ed once more, "Everyone sins."
Bill looked stunned. "Does ev
eryone sin?"
"Yes," she replied.
"Does even your husband sin?"
"Yes."
"Well," he said desperately,
"how are we going to get to heav
en then?"
We could never be saved from
our sins were we dependent upon
any human being, no matter how
godly. God Himself came in the
person of His Son, Jesus Christ.
He is the sinless one.
We may not be able Do under
stand how Christ can save human
ity from its sins, but our part is
to accept in faith that Christ died
for us. This is an individual mat
ter. Do you and I believe in
Christ as our personal Savior T
Prayer: We thank Thee, Father,
