our Social Many working people of retire- aseat age could be receiving Nckl security benefits even though they continue to work, report D. H. Bulter, Madison County roprissn tetive of the Social Security Ad ministration. Secant changes in the law permit older workers and certain qualified dependents to re- 1 security benefit, even tollers over the U00 celve social when the per year permitted under the law. The present law, Bulter states, permits a worker to earn up to $1800 a year and still receive all of his social security benefits in (that year. If he earn over 11400 year a certain amoot will ha withheld from the benefit paid to him year, as follows: Par each $8 he earns over flNO in the year, up to $1700, he will lose $1 In social security benefits. If he earns over $1700 to a year CARD OF THANKS he will loan $1 in social security benefit for aaeh $1 he earns to We wish to express our deep Mess of $1700. For example, if appreciation far the kindness a nuu oanw $1000 in a year shown during the death of oor which U $400 over the $1100 al- husband and father, Woodard Rice, lowed ae will loee $100 of his Thanks also for the many floral social secartty benefits for the James Teague, 89, Native Of County, Passes Saturday UES-VALUES a M.UES - VALUES - VALUES - VALUES - VALUES - VALUES - h w i aw AHA tributes, MRS. A man earning $2000 in a year ) $800 over the $1200 allowed will lose $650 of his social security I benefits: $1 in benefits for each I $2 earned over $1200 and up to I $1700, and $1 in benefits for each $1 earned over $1700 ($800). Butler says that while in the I latter ease the loss of $660 in social security benefits for the year might seen substantial, it may be only a portion of the total amount of benefits normally payable. Af an example, Butler cites the case of a man who has earned an aver age of $2000 Dor many years. TM man would be eligible to receivo a social security benefit of about $61 per month AT AGE 62. If, when he is 62, he has a wife and a child under the age of 18. te wife and child would receive about $37 each also. Thus the entire fsmilv's total benefit would be a bout $186 per month, or about $1600 a year. If the mentioned $660 above was lost by the work er because he continued to earn $2000 per year, he and his family would still be eligible to receive over $1000 per year in social security benefits, bringing their total income (wages and benefits) to over $3000 per year. Butler urges all retirement-age workers to find out about this pro vision of the law, either by writ ing to the Social Security Adminis tration, Asheville, N. C, for a free pamphlet on the subject, or by making an appointment to see him personally at the courthouse in Marshall.
