Rector of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Myr tle Rogers. Mr. Rector and Mrs. Rogers were attending their moth er's funeral (Mrs. Sal lie Rector), which was conducted by Mr, Ram sey, former pastor of Marshall Baptist Church. First Lt. and Mrs. Joseph C Malinoski Jr., who are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Sprin kle, in Marshall this week, will leave today (Thursday) for Char lottesville, Va., where Lt. Mall noski will take three months' spe cial training at the University of Virginia. Mrs. A. B. McDaniel has return ed to Marshall from Leeaville, S. C, where she visited her sister, Mrs. William J. Homes. Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Henderson returned Wednesday from Rome, Ga, where they visited Mr. Hen derson's mother who is ill. Katherine Cody, her roommate, Phyllis Gosnell and Andrea Tor rence spent the week-end with Miss Oody's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ker mit Cody. The girls are students at Western Carolina College, Cul lowhee. Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Ramsey and daughter, Donna, of Murphy, were visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ramsey of Mars Hill and Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Thomas of Hopewell, this week. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Eads spent Sunday in Charlotte with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Sprinkle; and their three children. Mr, and Mrs. Troy J. Andrs, of Clinton, Tenn., were visiting relatives in Marshall and Leices ter Sunday. Vota Vita Class To Meet Tuesday The Vota Vita Sunday School Class of the Marshall Baptist Church will meet Tuesday eve ning at 8 o'clock in the home of Mrs. Listen B. Ramsey. Mrs. Guy White will have charge of the program. C. F. Carroll Tells About Telstar At Mars Hill College Telstar, Bell System's famous experiment in satellite communi cations, wss described to interest ed Mars Hill College students Monday by C. F. Carroll, program director of American Telephone and Telepgraph Co. A specialist on the Telstar pro ject, Carroll spoke and showed pictures of the project at a 7:30 p. m. meeting in the Audio-Visual Room of Memorial Library. Harvey Lance, member of the college faculty in the math de partment, introduced the speaker. Attend Conference Editor and Mrs. Jim Story and Representative Liston B. Ramsey attended the press conference of Governor Terry Sanford last Sat urday at the Battery Park Hotel in Asheville. The conference was sponsored by the Western North Carolina Press Association. Betty Payne I Honored At King's College Miss Betty Payne, daughter of Mrs. Hazel Payne, RFD 1, Mar shall, has been recognized for her scholarship through her initiation into the Alpha Delta honorary scholarship sorority at King's Col lege, Charlotte. A 1962 graduate of Crossnore High School, Miss Payne entered King's College last September for the medical secretarial course. United ; Nations Program The Marshall Methodist Wom en's Society of Christian Service heard Mrs. R. R. Ramsey give a program on "The United Nations" family at its regular monthly meeting Wednesday evening at fche home of Mrs. J. A. Dennis. The organization of the United Nations was explained and the ma ny activities associated with our daily living were discussed. Brief men ton was made of the many spe cialized agencies within the organ ization. Preceding the program, Mrs. O. A. Gregory, assisted by four Girl Scouts, led in a meditation based on the ten Girl Scout laws. Nan cy Gentry, Millie Baucom and Sna ron Wilson, all of the Hayes Run commun ity participated. The WSCS is one of the sponsors of the local Girl Scout troops. In addition to the above, those present were! Mrs. J. L. Mrs. Ron Wilson, president, presided. a at Barring a last-minute change of plans, I will enter the Memorial Mission Hospital next Tuesday afternoon and will undergo a cata ract operation on my right eye Wednesday morning for" more than a year my vision has been becoming progressively clouded and for the past several months lt has been most difficult for me to read in recent weeks I have used a magnifying glass whenever I attempted to read newspapers, letters, and copy" this has been fax from satisfactory and I have miss ed reading a great deal it's really hard to try to edit a news paper without being able to read actually, my secretary has served as my eyes, reading to me most of the copy for the news paper my wife has served as my chaff eur as well as my eyes at home, often reading articles of interest to me in the past few weeks my vision has become bo impaired that it is most dif ficult to recognize people I pass on the sidewalk especially when the sun is shining although I still drive my car, it is with the greatest of caution I can't honestly say that Im looking for ward to the operation but f aim looking forward to regaining my vision while hospitalized and while recuperating I am leav ing the business in the hands of my staff I feel they will do ti good job and I hope they will re ceive the cooperation I get i reel tnat their duties and re sponsibilities will be made easier if you will help in any way you ran in preparing codv or nhom- mg in news I'm going ta miss being around for quite a while, but I have faith that every thing will be okey Miss Patricia Louise Whitson Honored At Skating Party On Sunday, March 10, Dr. Mrs. Willfam Whitson of Mars Hill entertained twenty-five guests from 2:00 until 8:30 p. m. with a skating party honoring their daughter Patricia on her four teenth birthday. Southwestern Singers, s tourin ehoir from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, will present con cert of sacred music in Moore Auditorium at Mars Hill College. A -voice chorus, the Singers will visit nine colleges and a dozen churches during their 2500 mile concert tour. Their program, according to the director, James McKinney, will survey what com posers have tried to say musical ly over the last 400 years. "We will sing every-day church music all the way up to the mas ters, plus spirituals and some folk songs," he said. Roscoe Buckner, Native Of County, Passes In Canada Word has been received here of the death of Roscoe Buckner, 78, of Weybum, Canada, a native of Mars Hill and the father of Jon Buckner of Enka. Mr. Buckner, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Buckner o f Mars Hill, was the oldest home steader in Weyburn in the pro vince of Saskatchewan. He had gone there with his wife, the for mer Miss Cora Hensley of Mars Hill 50 years ago. Surviving in addition to the son are the widow; five daughters Miss Ella Buckner of Macon, Ga. Mrs. Jack McNay of Sidney, Mo. Mrs. J. R. Jackson of Regina, Saskatchewan, and Mrs. Ken An ton and Mrs. F. D. Buckner o f Weyburn; three other sons, Stan ley and Clarence of Rateliffe, Saskatchewan and Debs of Al berta, Canada; and three sisters, Mrs. Raleigh English and Mrs. Edgar Phillips of Mars Hill and Mrs. Znde Ramsey of Jonesbroo, Tenn. His parents are both very sick and he requests prayers for them in our churches. We trust all will remember them. The rains Monday nightb rought the Laurel streams out of their banks. All bottom land near here was covered, some places looking like a lake. We are glad to report that most of our sick folks are able to be out again.
