MEN RESIST CHRIST

Text; Mark 12:13.11
Today wo will examine the na
ture of Jesus' teachings in order
to learn why men reject him and
his message.

Jesus foiled their hypocrisy. Ht
upheld the obligation of paying
taxes, but ha also, with greater
seriousness, upheld men's spirit
ual obligations. For what man
owes to God is infinitely more
fun what ha owes to Caesar. In
stead of falling Into the cunning
trap laid for him, Jesus answered
further questions (on the ressurec
tions and the law) ht such man
ner that his antagonists could not
establish a direct charge against
him.
The topic of our lesson points
to s serious question, "Why do
men resist Christ T" For an ans-
Iwer, let us look first at the New
selves to attempt to
question. Men oppose Jesus for
many reasons, of course, but soma
factors are basic to this opposi
tion. The first and most funda
mental answer is mat man oppose
Jesus because of then sin. Sin is
not necessarily an act It is a state
of being, a condition of life that
the Bible calls "sin" or "unright
eousness" la that of living in sep
aration from God. Marr' refuses to
worship God. Ha creates bis own
gods especially himself and
loves these false gods far too
much. This sin can be called the
condition of life in which man is
alienated from God. From this
basic condition of aeperation or
alienation coma acts that are cal
led "sins." Sins are expressions of
wrongly oriented life. It expres

but one does not cure sickness by
working only with the symptoms.
One must cure the csuse of the
symtoma. So it is with sin.

condition is brought under judg
merit. Man's wrongness is made
evident For man would rather in
dulge himself than be obedient to
God. He can control his small
world and give himself the veneer
of righteousness. He cannot tol
erate the claim of God upon him.
When man is encountered by the
true God, his temptation is al
ways to run . . . tio evade ... to
escape. If he cannot escape God
in any other way, he may turn
back on God and accuse him of
being at fault
In the final analysis, then, the
problem is not even a moral prob
lem. It is a spiritual condition.
For the real issue is man's will
or God's will. And our love of
self is often stronger than our love
of God.
There are four stages in love,
regarding the love of God. First,
we love ourselves. Second, we love
God for what he can do for us.
Third, we love him for his own
sake. Fourth, we wholly forget
ourselves and become one in spirit
with him. When we have accom
plished the third and fourth of
these stages, we can claim true
Christian belief. But how many
of us, alas, fail to get past the
second stage, frail mortals that
we are?
Jesus says clearly that no num
ber of acts can fulfill God's re
quirements. God asks the giving
ef the Whole personality, the ac
cptUW rf"!rhi Will as the ml of
life. And we rebel. This is ask
ing too much. We oppose God be
cause bis claim is more than we
want to accept
Jesus aroused opposition for
this same reason. He asked un
conditional commitment to God
and his kingdom. Jesus' challenge
was to total commitment. And
those who heard either followed
Jesus or opposed him. As pres-
ent-aay Christians, what is otrt
answer to the call of Christ?
