By COLBY EDITORIAL SUMMER PROMOTION HERE Perhaps we won't get to first base with this sug gestion but here goes anyway. Why don't the Marshall merchants have a sum mer promotion similar to the promotion Christmas? Isn't it true that business is extremely slack dur ing the summer months and merchants are complain ing about slow conditions? Sure, it will take some money and efforts to make a promotion successful but in the long run we believe a successful promotion will pay dividends. Several years ago the merchants tried a "Dollar Days" promotion that was highly successful. Why didn't they continue this annually? When you pick up newspapers from other towns and cities nearby you often find promotions of var ious kinds. They must "pay off" or they wouldn't continue them. Marshall is no different. We suggest the members of the Marshall Mer chants Association think seriously about a June o r July promotion and start planning now for the biggest summer event in our history. The public will respond if the merchants give them a promotion which will give them an incentive to trade here. This could also be true in Mars Hill and Hot Springs. - fiOn , . ATTEND ALUMNI BANQUET The 8th annual Marshall High School Alumni Association Banquet will be held this Saturday even ing in the school cafeteria. This annual occasion is one of the most enjoyable events during the year and brings together classmates and other chums who haven't seen each other in years. In addition to fine programs and speakers, there is always a delicious dinner and the fellowship i s great. We could never understand why so many ex Marshall High students who live in Marshall or close by seldom attend. We have attended all eight banquets and can truthfully say that we enjoyed every one of them. The speaker this year will be one of the most popular coaches MHS ever had Wayne Bradburn. We urge every ex-MHS student to make reservations NOW and be on the Island Saturday night at 7:30 o'clock. BOYS' BASEBALL HERE? If our boys are' to enjoy playing baseball in our county this summer isn't it high time that adults start making plans? Much interest has been shown in the organiza tion of Babe Ruth and; Little League ball in the coun ty. The results were most successful with splendid teams at Marshall, Mars Hill, Hot Springs and Wal nut in the past. It is needless to wonder if the BOYS want to play. They are most anxious, we are sure. The great need now is CAPABLE LEADERSHIP by ADULTS. There are hundreds of youngsters, maybe some of them future major leaguers, rarin' to play but for the lack of volunteer leaders, they are forced to ei ther play "unorganized" or simply not play at all. This is a shame. Let's find out IMMEDIATELY if there are men available to coach and manage the boys. Call a nmm ing, make definite plans, adopt a schedule and get started before it is too late. Are YOU interested? If so, drop a line to this newspaper and we'll see Prank Moore and others who have been so faithful and we feel sure that it won't be long until the boys are playing. -oOo- COURTHOUSE IMPROVEMENT Work on the courthouse should inspire others repaint and improve their buildings. The entire ma will be made more attractive when the court use improvements are completed. The bricks are being sand-blasted and should k new and with fresh white and grey paint on the King Bin Ice Gibe. Going on a picnic and need lee cubes? Big- ice cube that last? Freese up a batch using your wife's muffin pans. Each cube is king site. Lasts and lasts. Sleeve Shirt Pockets One of the handiest things a hiker, hunter or fisherman can have is a pocket sewed onto the sleeve of his (or her) shirt near the shoulder. Easy to get into while wearing a pack or holding a rod. Use of Aluminum Foil One of the many good camp uses for aluminum foil is to pin it across the back of your tent Shiny surface reflects light, makes the lantern's glow brighter; shap ed over a fist for a drinking cup; rain hat, campfire reflector oven for heating or baking, snow gog gles, rescue reflector, fishing lure, trail blaze (in small strips), emergency plate. Any more? Clear With Cola Heard a bottle of any kind of 'cola" drink poured on your wind shield while the wiper is working will keep road film off for hours. I'm not guaranteeing- it will work for everybody. Just passing it on in the hopes it will work for you. Waterproof Canvas Here's a quick and easy way to waterproof a canvas tent, boat cloth or a foul-weather jacket that has sprung a leak: rub the leaky area with a regular wax candle. Work wax into the cloth with vigor. Then apply heat in the form of a warm (not hot) iron. The wax will melt and give water repellency for a surprisingly long time. .22 Storage Remove one of the screws in the buttplate of your 22 Drill the butt with -inch drill. Fill with as many rounds as the hole will take. Slip plate back. Now, you have a nice emergency ammo sup ply with, little additional weight added to the rifle. 14e Th.tVipe ' Ever suddenly knock your pipe out of your mouth while fishing and watch it bounce off the side of the boat and sink. Drat the !!&"; luck! Well, it's easy to guard against this loss. Just take a length of light line, monofil is best, and tie it to the pipe where the stem joins the shank. Other end you make fast to a button on your shirt. (No, it won't pull the button off, wise guy.) New York A skin disease called "winter itch" is caused by too much air-conditioning. Dr. Marvin E. Chernosky, Hous ton, Texas Dermatologist, has re ported to the American Medical Association that this disease shows up in summer and hot wea ther.
